That morning I'd heard the ne reports of a recent study illustrati the appalling lack of knowledge of 1 American people. The survey that idences this did not pose difficult qu tions about a far-removed histori event or an obscure country on the o er side of the world. Rather, it pos basic questions about America's his ry and government. The questions revolved around 1 Constitution ? things like when a where it was written, what is the I of Rights and how does it set up c government? Results taken from a crc section of people indicate that ma are unaware of these basic tenants our history and our government. My two friends sharing lunch g? me a lot of insight into this. By that point, I knew I wasn't going to get much farther than answering the phone and I wouldn't be called in for a special assignment at the White House. I was learning about all of the hard work staffers do, the nonglamorous, behind-the-scenes work that one doesn't see and that some politicians do not appreciate. But, standing by him, or even more, standing in front of the Washington Monument, I was happy that I listened back in the days of elementary American history. It meant more knowing what it stands for. And I don't need a monument to remind me of why it is crucial to care about what happened a few hundred years before I was born.
