for a U.S. Senator last fall I was often

I did run into Ted Kennedy. In the
hall I literally ran into the itian while
en route to fetch some toner for the
copying machine. We did not wax patriotic.
By that point, I knew I wasn't
going to get much farther than answering
the phone and I wouldn't be
called in for a special assignment at the
White House. I was learning about all
of the hard work staffers do, the nonglamorous,
behind-the-scenes work that
one doesn't see and that some politicians
do not appreciate.
But, standing by him, or even
more, standing in front of the Washington
Monument, I was happy that I
listened back in the days of elementary
American history. It meant more knowing
what it stands for. And I don't need
a monument to remind me of why it
is crucial to care about what happened
a few hundred years before I was born.
Not everyone has the desire to be
a part of the American government.
The kicker is that everyone is. We are

This is why we have to know the
power and responsibility that entails.
We need to know who we hand over our
decision-making ability to. We were
given rights and I think it's a privilege
to have them and to know them.
