R1 Women's golf i ICHIM HUIVT Sports Editor Hie University of South Carolina losted the SEC Women's Golf rournament at The University Club 11 Blythewood this past weekend, [he field featured all 12 SEC schools, ncluding defending champion \uburn. The favorite to win the numament was Tennessee, by virtue if their victory three weeks ago in he Lady Gamecock Classic. But the Lady Vols couldn't match he stellar play of the Georgia Lady Bulldogs, who shot an 899 three- ? "ound score to take home the 1997 5HiU womens uoii unampionsmp. The Lady Bulldogs were led by reshman Shauna Estis, who on Friday night was named both SEC Freshman of the Year and SEC Player of the Year. Estis finished the tournament vith a score of two-over par 215 and vas named the medalist of the xjurnament for recording the lowest ndividual tournament score. "I definitely thought that we xrnld win, because we have such a jreat group of girls," Estis said. This is a prime example of what a ot of good camaraderie does. And vhen you can come together, mything is possible." The men defeated WofFord 99L4, but lost 93-68 to Virginia Tech. i ne women were victorious over Wofford 112-21. Tonique Williams led the way for the women. She won the 400meter dash with a time of 52.88 seconds, good enough to give her a provisional qualification for the NCAA championships. Tm extremely pleased with my 400," Williams said. "Running a 52.88 is really good at this point in time. I know that I have so much more left, given the right conditions and the right competition." Head coach Curtis Frye said that tier run was one of the best results of the day. "Tonique Williams qualified for the NCAA in the 400 and was probably our biggest highlight on the track," Frye said. South Carolina head coach Kristi Arney liked what she saw from her team as well. The Lady Gamecocks finished with a three-day score of 58-over par 910. The Gamecocks were paced by freshman Camilla FabborgAndersen and senior Rebeka LeeOwens with scores of 12-over par 215. Lee-Owens had the Lady Gamecocks best score on Friday with a seven-over par 78, and on Saturday with a one-over par 72. On Sunday F aaborg-Andersen shot a par round of 71 to post the best score of the day. The Lady Gamecocks came back from a disastrous start on Friday to climb back into the thick of the tournament. When the dust had cleared the Lady Gamecocks had finished fourth, and FaaborgAndersen earned Honorable Mention honors. "I am very happy and proud for my team," Arney said. "They have been working hard all year long, and it just hasn't come to fruition for them. I am glad to see their patience and hard work pay off for win Gamecocl Loren Thouvenot threw a distance of 177' 7" in the hammer to become a provisional qualifier. Thouvenot was happy with her throw, but was expecting it to be a bit better. "(The throw) was veiy, very good," Thouvenot said. "We've been practicing hard. I was expecting a better throw, but it was realty good." The other female competitor to qualify was Charmaine Howell in the 400-meter race with a time of ad.35 seconds. In the 100-meter dash, Jacobia Greene took first place with a time of 13.55 seconds. In the 100-meter hurdles, Rhody Williams, captain, finished first (14.87 seconds), closely followed by Carmen McClain who came in second (15.55 seconds). Running the 400-meter hurdles, Larae Grey was a winner in 1:05.09, and McClain finished second with a time of 1:06.97. In the 1500-meter competition, Suzi Higgins captured second in 5:09.14. It's estimated that eight of the .12 schools in the SEC will receive NCAA Regional bids, and to finish fourth in such a strong golf conference pleases Arney. "Fourth place in this conference is great," Arney said. "And we look forward to taking that confidence into regionals." Friday was a tough day for the Lady Gamecocks, though. "Friday the wind was howling, and (the golf course) really played tough," Arney said. "The mix of the weather with the wind, and the nerves of it being the championship just added a little bit to this course. "The last two days have been gorgeous, and the course allowed for some low scores so the girls took advantage of it," Arney said. LSU was the runner-up in the tournament with a 905, followed by Florida who shot a 908. The Lady Gamecocks were able to edge out Auburn by one stoke an the strength of back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes by junior Libby Howard and Faaborg-Andersen. The Lady Gamecocks appear to be in good shape for a NCAA East Regional bid and would compete in Normal, 111. on May 8-10 for the right to advance to the NCAA Finals. k Invitational The main team crossed the finish line in 46.16 seconds, and the "B" team ran it in 49.54 seconds. Ivana Skladana and Jennifer Britz finished second and third in the 800-meter race with times of 2:13.13 and 2:20.29.
