Hie University of South Carolina
losted the SEC Women's Golf
rournament at The University Club
11 Blythewood this past weekend,
[he field featured all 12 SEC schools,
ncluding defending champion
\uburn.
The favorite to win the
numament was Tennessee, by virtue
if their victory three weeks ago in
he Lady Gamecock Classic.
But the Lady Vols couldn't match
he stellar play of the Georgia Lady
Bulldogs, who shot an 899 three- ?
"ound score to take home the 1997
5HiU womens uoii unampionsmp.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by
reshman Shauna Estis, who on
Friday night was named both SEC
Freshman of the Year and SEC
Player of the Year.
Estis finished the tournament
vith a score of two-over par 215 and
vas named the medalist of the
xjurnament for recording the lowest
ndividual tournament score.
"I definitely thought that we
xrnld win, because we have such a
jreat group of girls," Estis said.
This is a prime example of what a
ot of good camaraderie does. And
vhen you can come together,
mything is possible."

The No. 4 women's and No. 22
nen's track and field teams played
lost to WofFord and Virginia Tech
at the Gamecock Invitational
Saturday.
The men defeated WofFord 99L4,
but lost 93-68 to Virginia Tech.
i ne women were victorious over
Wofford 112-21.
Tonique Williams led the way
for the women. She won the 400meter
dash with a time of 52.88
seconds, good enough to give her a
provisional qualification for the
NCAA championships.
Tm extremely pleased with my
400," Williams said. "Running a
52.88 is really good at this point in
time. I know that I have so much
more left, given the right conditions
and the right competition."
Head coach Curtis Frye said that
tier run was one of the best results
of the day.
"Tonique Williams qualified for
the NCAA in the 400 and was
probably our biggest highlight on
the track," Frye said.

really, really good," Kelly said. "We
played some great golf the last two
days. I am extremely proud of my
team."
Kelly was not the only one that
was proud of her team. South
Carolina head coach Kristi Arney
liked what she saw from her team
as well.
The Lady Gamecocks finished
with a three-day score of 58-over
par 910. The Gamecocks were paced
by freshman Camilla FabborgAndersen
and senior Rebeka LeeOwens
with scores of 12-over par
215.
Lee-Owens had the Lady
Gamecocks best score on Friday
with a seven-over par 78, and on
Saturday with a one-over par 72.
On Sunday F aaborg-Andersen shot
a par round of 71 to post the best
score of the day.
The Lady Gamecocks came back
from a disastrous start on Friday
to climb back into the thick of the
tournament. When the dust had
cleared the Lady Gamecocks had
finished fourth, and FaaborgAndersen
earned Honorable Mention
honors.
"I am very happy and proud for
my team," Arney said. "They have
been working hard all year long,
and it just hasn't come to fruition
for them. I am glad to see their
patience and hard work pay off for

Loren Thouvenot threw a
distance of 177' 7" in the hammer
to become a provisional qualifier.
Thouvenot was happy with her
throw, but was expecting it to be a
bit better.
"(The throw) was veiy, very good,"
Thouvenot said. "We've been
practicing hard. I was expecting a
better throw, but it was realty good."
The other female competitor to
qualify was Charmaine Howell in
the 400-meter race with a time of
ad.35 seconds.
In the 100-meter dash, Jacobia
Greene took first place with a time
of 13.55 seconds. In the 100-meter
hurdles, Rhody Williams, captain,
finished first (14.87 seconds), closely
followed by Carmen McClain who
came in second (15.55 seconds).
Running the 400-meter hurdles,
Larae Grey was a winner in 1:05.09,
and McClain finished second with
a time of 1:06.97. In the 1500-meter
competition, Suzi Higgins captured
second in 5:09.14. The two relay
teams ran strong in the 4X100

places.

them."
It's estimated that eight of the
.12 schools in the SEC will receive
NCAA Regional bids, and to finish
fourth in such a strong golf
conference pleases Arney.
"Fourth place in this conference
is great," Arney said. "And we look
forward to taking that confidence
into regionals."
Friday was a tough day for the
Lady Gamecocks, though.
"Friday the wind was howling,
and (the golf course) really played
tough," Arney said. "The mix of the
weather with the wind, and the
nerves of it being the championship
just added a little bit to this course.
"The last two days have been
gorgeous, and the course allowed
for some low scores so the girls took
advantage of it," Arney said.
LSU was the runner-up in the
tournament with a 905, followed by
Florida who shot a 908. The Lady
Gamecocks were able to edge out
Auburn by one stoke an the strength
of back-to-back birdies on the 13th
and 14th holes by junior Libby
Howard and Faaborg-Andersen.
The Lady Gamecocks appear to
be in good shape for a NCAA East
Regional bid and would compete in
Normal, 111. on May 8-10 for the
right to advance to the NCAA Finals.
k Invitational
The main team crossed the finish
line in 46.16 seconds, and the "B"
team ran it in 49.54 seconds. Ivana
Skladana and Jennifer Britz finished
second and third in the 800-meter
race with times of 2:13.13 and
2:20.29. Perhaps one of the best
to captain Erin NarzinskL She broke
the school record in the long jump
with a distance of 19* 10".
For the men's team, Patrick
Tvarkunas cleared the bar set at
15' 9" to give him first place in the
pole vault. The runner-up in the
pole vault was Michael Lameier,
who cleared a height of 15' 3". The

performances, a cheery group here,
and tremendous team spirit. I am
very, very pleased."
