Or maybe your warts are the flat, pink ones that may grow in a female's vagina or male's urethra. These are the noticeable symptoms of the sexually transmitted disease called human papillomavirus (HPV). But the majority of people with STDs show no symptoms at all so it may seem as if an infected person is perfectly healthy. An estimated 50 percent of sexually active college students have HPV, a 600-percent increase of infected students over the last 20 years, according to /ivi/i/1 a w\/<iinw\^ havma TT?itrA*fii^TT 1 H1 nlnncinn lUUf \AJUKgK, ixJLfJCi uzrux, a. iCAUJwn. ic^uiicu lux suuic umvcioitjf 1V/1 wuuoco. "HPV is the most common STD at USC and accounted for 1000 visits" to the Health and Wellness Center, Lisa Mohn, director of Health and Wellness Programs, said. While there can be no cure for HPV since it is a virus, treatment is available. Warts can be removed after several doctor visits through burning, freezing or chemical methods. Even after the warts are removed, a person remains infected throughout his or her life and can transmit HPV to any future sexual partners. Certain symptomless strains of HPV root themselves in a woman's cervix and become part of her DNA. This can ultimately lead to cervical cancer, and experts believe HPV causes the msyority of today's cancer cases. So why is there a sudden focus on HPV and STDs? The reason is that April is National STD Awareness Month. One of the hardest aspects of making students aware of STDs is "theii prevalent attitude ofbad things won't happen to me,m Mohn said. "STDs are a very private matter to people and shrouded in secrecy. Walking around campus, it doesn't seem like anyone else has them," Mohn said. For college students, "sex is fairly spontaneous. Left undetected, these STDs lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women and sterility in men. PID spreads from a woman's genital tract to her ovaries, leaving her infertile. According to Transitions 1996-1997, published by USC, "PID caused by chlamydia is the most common form of infertility in the country today." Because chlamydia and gonorrhea are bacterial STDs, they can be treated with antibiotics, if symptoms are detected. Symptoms include burning during urination, mild abdominal pain, and discharge from the penis. , About 85 percent of women and 40 percent of men with chlamydia exhibit no symptoms, according to ASHA.
