The USC men's basketball team became just the third No. 2 seed to lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament after the 78-65 loss to No. 15 seed Coppin State. The Eagles of Coppin State got on the board first as Antione Brockington hit a jump shot with 18:46 left in the first half. Then, 30 seconds later, Brockington shot two free throws to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead early. Sophomore BJ McKie hit a three-point shot with 15:53 to go in the first half to take the Gamecocks' first lead of the game at 7-6. After see-sawing back and forth, the Gamecocks gained a 7-point lead at the 7:26 mark in the first half when junior guard Melvin Watson hit a jumper to give the Gamecocks a 22-15 lead. The crowd at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena got into the game when the Eagles closed the gap at halftime to 34 all on two made free throws by Fred Warrick. The Gamecocks shot 43 percent in the first half while Coppin State shot 35 percent. USC owned the battle of the boards by a 19-18 mark. At the start of the second half, it looked as if the Gamecocks were ready to take care of business as they went up by five points on a driving layup by Watson with 17:34 left in the game. The Gamecocks kept the lead at five points until the 9:28 mark with Terquin Mott shot a jumper to bring the score to 49-47. Then Danny Singletary hit a jumper to tie the score at 49, just 20 seconds later. From then on, USC would lead only once more when, at 7:21, junior forward Ryan Stack hit two free throws to push the score to 54-53. Then it got ugly. The lead ballooned to seven points at 63-56 with 3:17 left in the game when Warrick made a layup. "We came out flat [in the second half], they were hanging around and the fans started to get on their side," sophomore William Gallman said. "They were hitting shots with guys in their face." He started 51 games in centerfield n 1996, batting .321 and stealing 14 bases, the sixth-highest stolen >ase total for a s?- in Gamecock listory. When he gets on base, it gives the batters behind him more confidence." Hightower was a transfer student from junior college, choosing the Southeastern Conference for its level of competition. "The competition's been great," Hightower said. "Every time we play ??I a game in the SEC, we see Pa top-10-round pitcher, and I don't think you're going to see that in any other ' conference." Hightower reflected on the goals he set for himself when " J to he made the move from Jm junior college to South Carolina. "I guess everyone has goals when they come in from a high school, especially in Pittsburgh, into the SEC," Hightower said. "You think about how good you'll do. I guess you set a certain level. "I don't think I realized how good these guys really were, and my aspirations, my goals, kind of came down a little bit. "So yes, I guess my goals have changed. My goals were really to nlav Division T anH rnmnoto at tVio SEC level, and I've done that. And then I'd say I'd try to go a little further and hit over .300 every year, and I've done that. So, I'm happy." Hightower sat out March 15 against VMI to give his hamstring rest. He classified the injury as "not serious." "Through medication it should be fine," Hightower said. "The hamstring is just something that needs some rest, basically.
