PITTSBURGH?The Gamecocks joined the
ranks of Arizona in 1993 and Syracuse in 1991
when they lost on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh.
The USC men's basketball team became just
the third No. 2 seed to lose in the first round of
the NCAA Tournament after the 78-65 loss to
No. 15 seed Coppin State.
The Eagles of Coppin State got on the board
first as Antione Brockington hit a jump shot
with 18:46 left in the first half. Then, 30 seconds
later, Brockington shot two free throws to give
the Eagles a 4-0 lead early.
Sophomore BJ McKie hit a three-point shot
with 15:53 to go in the first half to take the
Gamecocks' first lead of the game at 7-6.
After see-sawing back and forth, the
Gamecocks gained a 7-point lead at the 7:26
mark in the first half when junior guard Melvin
Watson hit a jumper to give the Gamecocks a
22-15 lead.
The crowd at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena got
into the game when the Eagles closed the gap
at halftime to 34 all on two made free throws
by Fred Warrick.
Sophomore Arthur Carlisle stole the ball
with two seconds left in the half and missed a
three-pointer at the buzzer that would have

given Carolina a halftime lead.
The Gamecocks shot 43 percent in the first
half while Coppin State shot 35 percent. USC
owned the battle of the boards by a 19-18 mark.
At the start of the second half, it looked as
if the Gamecocks were ready to take care of
business as they went up by five points on a
driving layup by Watson with 17:34 left in the
game.
The Gamecocks kept the lead at five points
until the 9:28 mark with Terquin Mott shot a
jumper to bring the score to 49-47.
Then Danny Singletary hit a jumper to tie
the score at 49, just 20 seconds later.
From then on, USC would lead only once
more when, at 7:21, junior forward Ryan Stack
hit two free throws to push the score to 54-53.
Then it got ugly.
The lead ballooned to seven points at 63-56
with 3:17 left in the game when Warrick made
a layup.
"We came out flat [in the second half], they
were hanging around and the fans started to
get on their side," sophomore William Gallman
said. "They were hitting shots with guys in their
face."

Senior Etienne Hightower's first
rear with the Gamecocks was a big

He started 51 games in centerfield
n 1996, batting .321 and stealing
14 bases, the sixth-highest stolen

listory.
He also batted leadoff last season,

lightower scored 48 runs last year

Early in 1997, Hightower has
?een slowed by a nagging hamstring
njury, so Head Coach Ray Tanner
las temporarily moved hot-hitting
unior Derick Urquhart into the
5adoff spot, moving Hightower down
n the lineup. Tanner lists a couple
?f reasons for the switch.
"The fact that
iightower's slowed a little
at right now, and Urquhart H

iightower's a kid that puts

lo a lot to help contribute
o this team. HIGHTC
"I think sometimes he
uts more pressure on himself than
le should, and I was hoping that
the move] would help him relax a
ittle bit."
Hightower, named a team coaptain
by Tanner before the start
f the season, has taken this all in
tride.
Batting leadoff, Hightower said,
doesn't really matter to me, just as

should do]. I think the freshmen who
came in this year and the junior
college transfers that came in this
year look up and ask a lot of questions
to the seniors. To all the seniors, not
just the captains, but to all the seniors.
"It does put a little pressure on
you with a new coach coming in and
maybe people not feeling as
comfortable talking, so they go ij
the seniors and ask a lot of questions."
Student Sports Information
Director Bob Balut agrees.
"He's a quiet leader who leads by
example, iialut said. "It Hightower
goes well, the team goes well. When
he's leadoff, he sets the tone. When
he gets on base, it gives the batters
behind him more confidence."
Hightower was a transfer student
from junior college, choosing the
Southeastern Conference for its level
of competition.
"The competition's been great,"
Hightower said. "Every time we play
??I a game in the SEC, we see
Pa top-10-round pitcher, and
I don't think you're going to
see that in any other
' conference."
Hightower reflected on the
goals he set for himself when
" J to he made the move from
Jm junior college to South
Carolina.
"I guess everyone has goals
when they come in from a
high school, especially in Pittsburgh,
into the SEC," Hightower said. "You
think about how good you'll do. I
guess you set a certain level.
"I don't think I realized how good
these guys really were, and my
aspirations, my goals, kind of came
down a little bit.
"So yes, I guess my goals have
changed. My goals were really to
nlav Division T anH rnmnoto at tVio
SEC level, and I've done that. And
then I'd say I'd try to go a little further
and hit over .300 every year, and
I've done that. So, I'm happy."
Hightower sat out March 15
against VMI to give his hamstring
rest.
He classified the injury as "not
serious."
"Through medication it should
be fine," Hightower said. "The
hamstring is just something that
needs some rest, basically. And I
need some anti-inflammatories to
calm it down a little bit."
res extension
made the announcement Tuesday,
saying University President Dr. John
Palms has approved the extension
and will recommend it to the Board
of Trustees.
"Coach Fogler has done an
outstanding job of developing a
championship-caliber program here
at Carolina, McGee said.
