The mad scientists apparently took DNA from the long-departed Billie Holiday and Bessie Sn^ith and fused it to create an uncanny combination. Then, one of their mindnumbingly generic bands, the Offspring, achieved mainstream success, and suddenly, Epitaph owner (and former Bad Religion guitarist) Brett Gurewitz found his D.I.Y. little label had gained the attention of the mainstream. Madeleine Peyroux's voice is an amazing mix of the two singera with the mellow throatiness of Billie Holiday and the warm roughness of Bessie Smith wrapped in Peyroux's own silky smoothness. Even if Peyroux is not the genetic daughter of Billie Hobday and Bessie Smith, she is certainly their spiritual daughter. Her voice moves over a wide iin true to punk the Offspring were just the first Epitaph band to really break into that "let's spend our entire life at the mall, dude" demographic. Mr. Brett, being the savvy businessman CNN portrays him as, realized he could earn enough for a Scrooge McDuck-like money bin if he could convince the public Epitaph was a "legitimate" label. It didn't help when Offspring switched to a major label after entering the realm of being played during fair rides. One of Mr. Brett's first moves toward "legitimizing" Epitaph was signing a band that broke away from the traditional skateboardingfriendly sound Epitaph was renowned for, yet who would sell more albums than previous Epitaph ilable! Three of the tunes are penned by Peyroux, and like her voice, the songs on the album cover a total range of emotion. The songs are eclectic, even dipping into French folk songs. And in tracks like "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter" and her self-penned "Dreamland," she mixes folk and jazz styles in a manner reminiscent of that pioneered by Joni Mitchell aknesses of lab Valentine is as good as anything Epitaph has released since the last New Bomb Turks album.
