S Winner of the 1996 CIVIA Pacemaker Award ft Hie (Samccock ts Serving USC since 1908 We're ft! OTTT" kk Story by Achim Hunt, Sports Editor It all started when a few members of the pep band and the Student Gamecock Club gathered at Eagle Aviation outside of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport on the night of Feb. 1 to congratulate the men's basketball team on a fine 15-point win over LSU. Then two weeks later, the Gamecocks went up to Cincinnati and upset the then No. 8 Bearcats 9783. The win brought out a pretty large crowd of m between 300 and 400 people and most of the local TV stations and newspapers. It was nothing like last night though. You see those little Gamecocks from a place called Columbia, S.C., that eveiybody in the nation (including our own fans) can't believe is one of the nation's best college basketball teams just beat Kentucky. And bov. when vou beat Kentuckv. on their home court, on their Senior Day, on national television, for the SEC regular season championship, then if m you are a Gamecock fan or student, you better go < and celebrate. You see, it was the first time Kentucky had lost at Rupp Arena in its past 34 games there, and the first time they had lost on their Senior Day in 33 years. Add that to the fact that this was Carolina's first SEC championship, not just in basketball, but in any varsity sport, any 9elf-lCipecting Gamecock fen should have been out at the airport cheering on our team. And judging from the huge crowd out at the airport % I Faculty developmei ^TAFF REPORTS a wide range off and innovativ The University of South Carolina colleges and u men's basketball team isn't the only thing higher educatii putting the university in the national 0f TIAA-CREF spotlight. When the charter touched down at 5:31 p.m. in Columbia, the pep band played the fight song and the cheerleaders cheered and the fans roared for their team that had just arrived from the end of their march through the SEC. The crowd was happy to see their players, but they wanted to hear from them. So head coach Eddie Fogler and the three starting guards, Melvin Watson, Larry Davis and BJ McKie all spoke to the crowd. "I want to thank you all for coming out here and supporting our players," Fogler said. "We won the championship outright here today. "We were really aggressive out there today, but we got some more game left to play, and we hope to keep this think going." After Eddie gave a few words to the fens to really get the crowd fired up, point guard and team captain Melvin Watson took center stage. "When the season started, we got great support from you in Columbia, even when things got tough," Watson said. "But now we are SEC Champs! And this has been a great year for me, and we hope that it continues." Melvin then let Larry Davis, the leading scorer of the Kentucky game, take over.
