Sports Editor Before the match all the talk was of a mismatch, but after Evander HolyfielcFs stunning upset over Mike Tyson, the talk centered on a rematch. Holyfield, the former world heavyweight champion, was a 9-to-l underdog, but he knocked Tyson down and belted the reigning champion senseless, winning by technical knockout I with 2 minutes, 23 seconds remaining in the 11th round. Holyfield used his heart, his hands and his head in a gallant performance that restored him to the throne from which he lost on April 22,1994, to Michael Moorer. Promoter Don King calls for rematch. "I did what it took to win," Holyfield 1 |IMW#/|ii Men's Tennis USC sophomore Keith Brill won four matches in two days to advance to the winner's bracket of the Rolex Region II Indoor Tennis Championships. Brill has now rnmlifipH for tho RaIpy National Indoor Championships. On Saturday, Brill breezed past * Andres Guzman of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2 and then defeated Hampton's Fernando Arauju, 7-6,6-3. On Sunday, the Columbia native came from behind to defeat Murphy Payne of Florida State, 3-6,6-1,6-4. He then beat Georgia Tech's BJ TVaub in straight sets, 6-4,6-2. Brill was supposed to play Doug Root of Duke to determine the outright k winner, but both players declined. I Volleyball The Lady Gamecock volleyball team dropped to fourth place in the district Four poll which was released Nov. 12. Florida, who is 26-1 and ranked number one in the nation, Arkansas (20-8,103) and Auburn (19-8,9-4) are ranked k ahead of USC. Carolina is tied for second in the SEC East standings with a 19-7 overall and 8-4 SEC record. Men's Swimming USC swimmers Jon Waldenmayer, Matt Houp and Andrew Cho currently rank in the Top 25 in the nation in individual events as released by Taper & Shave. Waldenmayer, a sophomore from Ft. Thomas, Ky., currently ranks fifth in the nation in the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.17. Waldenmayer is also ranked in the 100 yard backstroke (50.95) and 200 yard backstroke (1:50.18). Cho, from New Minister, British Columbia, is ranked eighth in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:51.08. Cho is also ranked tenth in the 400 yard individual medley after a time of 4:01.53. Houp, from Pawleys Island, SC, is ranked 24th in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 59.62. More Mon's Swimming The men's swimming team returns to action on Friday, Nov. 22, when the Gamecocks travel to the McHugh Natatorium to take on the Clemson Tigers. Women's Cross Country The women's cross country team competed in the SEC Conference Championships this past weekend by placing just 11th out of the 12 team field at Oxford, Miss. The Gamecocks scored 285 points as the University of Florida clinched the women's title. Carolina's top runner was Kristina Brown (47th at 19:26). Finishing second through fifth were: Mary C. Barry (54th at 19:36); Joyce Peebles (56th at 19:39); Karen Padula (60th at 19:48) and Suzanne Higgins (77th at 20:52). Men's Soccer The USC men's soccer team finished its season Monday, coming back to tie N.C. State, 2-2 in a penalty-marred game at Stone Stadium. After falling behind 2-0, Robbie Pait scored two second half goals to knot the score. Neither team was able to score in the extra period. A total of 67 fouls were called with 14 yellow cards and two ejections of Carolina players (David Tart and Kristinn Larusson) called, leaving Carolina with only nine players on the field at the end of the game. USC ends the season with an overall record of 8-9-2.
