After six months of taking three drugs ATZ, 3TC and ritonavir six people had levels of the AIDS virus too low for current tests to find, reported Daan Notermans from the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Individual colleges have the option of having a centralized ' or decentralized advisement process. ! In some colleges, freshmen must 1 attend a group advisement session. In other colleges, all students are responsible 1 for making an appointment and speaking 1 with their advisor. 1 According to the Associate and Assistant Deans' Council, no matter J what form is utilized, the goal remains 1 the same: "to help students develop s suitable educational plans which are compatible with their career and life 1 goals." 1 Those involved in the advisement ^ process say it should be corporative effort between the student and the advisor. 5 Both the student and the advisor must 1 come to the appointment with the appropriate information. 1 "It is the responsibility of each student ' to understand and complete all < requirements for the degree. The student, 1 in consultation with the advisor, will f construct a program of studies that meets all departmental, Collegiate and university < requirements for graduation," the s Associate and Assistant Deans' Council '< guidebook said. : Students are responsible for being familiar with what classes they've already - < nad and what classes they still need to 1 take. The student is also expected to s come to advisement with a general idea of what classes he or she would like to s take the following semester. i Individual advisors are, in return, i expected to assist the student in picking 1 classes that are consistent with the student's educational goals and interests, s The advisor should also continually j monitor the student's progress to make 1 sure all graduation requirements are i being met. i USC students have a multitude of opinions about the advisement process : based on their personal experiences. ] Business an( BRANDI MARTIN Staff Writer < What do Biological Sciences and ] Business Administration have in common? i Fellowships! STAFF KcrOmS The last thing a victim of stress or depression wants or needs is added anxiety. Yet, the search for the right therapist and the social stigma attached to being a mental patient can bring plenty of anxiety. "Knowing when you need to seek therapy and understanding your counseling options can help enormously," said Dr. Clyde Flanagan, a psychiatrist in the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine. "No one having emotional difficulties wants or needs added worries." But it's hard to be objective about our personal thoughts, feelings and relationship problems said Flanagan. A good barometer for deciding whether to seek help is to monitor significant changes in work performance, personal activities and interaction with others. Matthew Speer, a transfer student, said the helpfulness of the advisement process depends a lot on one's advisor; some advisors are really good and others aren't. He went on to say advisors need to do more to help students overcome ( Vioir r>nnfiicinn aVirmt wViipVi ploccoc tn take. "Advisors need to give more input [in the advisement process], because sometimes students just don't know which classes to take," Speer said. Freshman Tiffanie Mims said her advisement went smoothly. Her advisor told her which classes she was supposed to take. Mims agreed that advisement is a joint process between the student and the advisor. However, she feds the Advisor should play the larger role. "Students should be told what they aeed to take, but then they should decide when they want to take [that class]," Mims said. In the business department, some students consider the advisement process ;o be orderly and efficient. Sophomore Alison McKittrick said :he advisors know what the students aeed to graduate, better than the students io. She added that as long as her advisor eads her in the right direction towards graduating, she's satisfied. The College of Journalism and Mass Communications has slightly different advisement process. All students with 10 hours or less must attend a group advisement session. Freshmen "have so many common questions, and group advisement speeds :he process up," senior Virginia Funk said. During group advisement, journalism students are told about all the requirements for the college. They also receive a timeline of when they should tentatively take each of their courses. To further help with the process, select juniors and seniors in the college serve as Peer Advisors. These students work with freshmen to ease their concerns about what classes to take and the whole advisement process. "Peer Advisors take some of the smaller tasks off the shoulders of orofessors," said Funk, who's a Peer i biology fe at USC in the u 0 1 1 6 g 6 of Business EF^^*55N^ Administration. "You may seek the usual support of friends and family first," Flanagan said. "But it's important not to let problems linger when those supports don't help or if you're not comfortable sharing details of your problems with people close to you. Thafs the time to pursue outside help." Tamily physicians, minister and coworkers, especially those who have professional contacts with therapeutic professionals, are good starting points. But it's important to understand that referrals by people familiar to you can have drawbacks," Flanagan said. Depending on the nature of the problem, a person may not be comfortable talking with his family physician or a therapist who has counseled a friend or family member. Asking a co-worker for referrals may be imposing as well. Even seeking counseling from a family minister can be awkward for some people, Flanagan added. Working with the students, Funk ' said many freshmen feel overwhelmed i by the sheer weight of the class load. They're also hesitant to make choices thev think will effect the rest of their options: Family counselors typically have master's degrees and use a variety of techniques typically for resolving family conflicts. Social workers typically have i lives. However, Funk thinks the advisement process could run more smoothly if 1 students take a more active role in the process. "There's a lot of confusion that could llowships be standings and professional achievement. Students with undergraduate degrees in engineering and finance are more likely to be selected. Dr. William Drennen, a clinical psychologist in USC's psychology department, says choices for professional therapists vary depending on the type and level of training and certification and the services they perform. They range from family counselors and social workers to clinical psychologists and psychiatrists. "Regardless of whom you choose, make sure they are board-certified in their respective fields and that they are reputable for providing sensitive, respectful and confidential patient counseling," Drennen said. Overall, students consider advisement to be an essential part in completing their college careers. "Advisement is helpful, because without it, a lot of students would be lost about deciding what they need to do and how to do it," freshman Chrystal Edney said. ing offered Biological Sciences are for students who have completed less than one year of graduate study toward M.S., Ph.D. or Sc.D. degrees in biological sciences. Psychiatrists have medical degrees and, like clinical psychologists, practice psychotherapy. The major distinction between the two professions is that psychiatrists have received medical training with at least four years postmedical school training, including supervised clinical experience. As a result of this medical training, psychiatrists can treat biochemical disorders and prescribe medication. Nurse practitioners who have master's or doctoral degrees can provide individual counseling and therapy, and monitor medication prescribed by a physician. THERAPIST page 2 # .
