With our vote we have said, "Okay, we believe in you, now go represent us." Well, sometimes on the way 0 from the hometown to the capital ^ building, our representatives forget who voted for them. That's why political involvement shouldn't be limited to an election year. In fact, it's almost pointless to be involved just for an election. If people aren't involved when their representatives are out making Dohcv. the politicians don't' p know what the people think. And in absence of pressure from voters, which are the first people politicians listen to, they will usually look out for themselves first and foremost. The people have to be watchdogs, and make sure that the people they voted for are P looking out for them, first and foremost. i That is the entire purpose of representative democracy. Through elections, we have placed a certain amount of trust in these people, but history has , shown us that there really is no such thing as a politician you can < completely trust. So how can these magazines be doing s any good? Do we really need to know lat we are not thin enough, not pretty nough, not well-dressed enough? To what lengths would we have to o to look like those women on the cover f Vogue? Well, we would have to start with ur weight. We'd, on average, have to reigh approximately 13 pounds. When I got my cat from the pound, ou could see her ribs sticking through er sides. Her hair was dull from lalnutrition. And she was so starved ir love, she'd have jumped into bed with nyone to get some attention. To sum p, she could have been a model if she ere a person. Yet, I thought she looked unhealthy, spent the greater part of my summer seding my cat so she wouldn't look so norexic. But teenage girls still think ley need to look like half-starved cats. I've read articles pondering "why norexia and bulimia are becoming more idespread among teenagers." And I ponder what kind of dummy ould write an article like that Obviously le who has never stood in line at the r /"~^V TT T/^TT 4-X^V juu way iu i sel more human and less uncaring. They are innocent, good No one could rgue with what you are doing. The jcision to help in these ways is easy id right. But sometimes the question of hether or not to help someone is not i clear and does not rest lightly on one's inscience. There is a time when help ims into a cushion, when what someone ay need in order to get better is not a ishion, but some hard-ass asphalt. What is the difference between helping friend and becoming an enabler? I've had a hard time learning that sson, and I still am. But I've begun to jure out the basics of it. I've learned ddling only goes so far, then it turns to something worse: dependence. Someone very dear to me once needed y help. Is the waif look so attractive in real life? Insofar as the "dead corpse" look is in, I think so. But when I actually see adolescent girls, it seems to me that the healthier, my-parents-feed-me look is very effective. Not quite so, well, half-dead. I had a subscription to "Cosmopolitan" magazine last year. I don't know why, but I did. Every time I read an issue,-1 would buy a new tube of lipstick and a box of Snackwell's. But I got sick of hearing about "21 Ways to Hold On To Your Man! (In Exciting New Ways He'll Love!)," "How I Caught A Guy With Just A Cherry And A Bikini," and "1109 Things You Need To Do Every Single Darn Day In Order To Look Like The Sunken-Cheek Hussy On the Cover." And the other magazines are just the same slop. They claim to appeal to the "new woman," the smart and savvy business gal, but all they do is turn us into diet zombies. In fact, I would not be one bit surprised to near tnat men actually own , deal with life I stayed and stayed, thinking what my friend needed was someone who was there, always, unlike the mother or father who were completely ignorant and unsupportive. Each failure hurt worse, but I stayed. Yet my supposed "help" began to truly hurt my fiiend. As others dropped away < or were apathetic, this person always came back to me for help. I became the safety cushion. I thought i I was helping, yet all I was doing was ; enabling my friend to continue destructive behavior. ] When I finally put my foot down and ; did not comfort again, this child fled to i others. It was the worst Christmas of my life, losing a best friend like that. -1 I waited in complete agony, and sure ; enough, my friend came back, stronger, i This time sobriety lasted for a few months. 1 By then, I had left the scene. I couldn't handle problems meant for a psychiatrist ] and prescription drugs. < Tough love can work when the isible for lying ; company research documents dating ] back to 1963 stipulated that it was ' addictive. ] How then does it follow that someone who lies about nicotine and takes millions ( of dollars of blood money from the tobacco companies, whose products kill over 400,000 Americans every year, is ready ^ for sainthood? { By any rational criteria, someone who allies himself with companies who ( knowingly sell our c hildren an addictive / 3_ ~ HIS Game | so use this ss i drinking game, vo j ?> - WUSC Q ni.e 5 LISTENER 5/ PIO Picru^e (jN/*WAlLA?L? 1_ Z-i. It sounds like the kind of tricky, scared of eveiything with both intelligence and sex appeal attitude a man would have. But even if men are behind this conspiracy of "women's magazines," it is our fault for giving in. We stand in the check-out line, and, instead of turning our attention to the Elvis Meets Ross Perot in Outer Space headlines of the "Weekly World News," we pick up a copy of "AnorexipoHtan." Then we buy it, take it home, and beat ourselves over the head with it. You may be a lost cause. You may battle weight for the rest of your life because you think it is important that you look like a Baywatch Babe. You may drink lite beer for the rest of your days. But think about the next generation. Nobody else needs to be burdened with our impossible Barbie doll dreams. Nobody else should have to look forward to breast implants and tummy tucks. Nobody else needs to think that 89 pounds is "about normal for me." Next time, dont pick up the magazine. . Buy MAD instead. (Not sponsored, paid-for or agreed to in any way by that guy on the cover of MAD magazine.) 's problems problem is not deep-rooted. My mother proved this to me herself. She comforted and cuddled me during a rougn Dout, until this period started to last over a couple of months. Then she stopped being my helper,.and before she became an enabler, yelled at me to get off my butt and stop hurting those around me. Once I realized I wasn't just hurting inside, but hurting those who loved me as well, I snapped out of that one fast. Ifs hard to figure out where that fine line runs. It's even more difficult to actually stop helping when help becomes an accomplice. To force yourself to step aside and watch someone you care about deal with a problem on their own is rough, but sometimes it is the only way to allow that person to get better. Being thrown to the wolves forces you to deal with your own problems head >n and be responsible for yourself. That's called growing up. ibout tobacco product that kills its users is contemptible, rhis slimy shoe fits both Dole and the fepublican party as a whole.
