Power had hoped to use the seat as leverage to close down the nuclear waste dump at the Barnwell facility, find new ways to fund education and work towards campaign finance reform. "I'm fresh and new and not really spoiled by government, which is a help because people can be really cynical at times," Powers said prior to election day. He also praised the Democratic Party for aiding in his campaign. "The Democratic party really opened its doors to us," Power said on Monday. One of the contributing factors that led to his probable election loss may have been Power's decision not to accept political action committee (PAC) money to help fund his campaign. "We didn't take any PAC money," Power said. "It was very important to us. We wanted an old-fashioned, grassroots campaign." Power has already worked for the National Park Service and serves on the South Carolina Sierra Club Board of Directors, according to a prior article in The Gamecock. Power was backed by the U5C Young Democrats, who helped with Power's campaign. "Young kids played a vital part in this campaign," Power said on Monday. He was also hoping that his very public campaign would help people get to know him, and then remember him at the noils.
