in the South Carolina
House of
I Representatives came
to an end last night.
With 61% of the precincts reporting
at press time, Power had received only
32% of the votes.
Jim Harrison had garnered 68% of
the vote, all but assuring him another
term in House seat 75.
Power had hoped to use the seat as
leverage to close down the nuclear waste
dump at the Barnwell facility, find new
ways to fund education and work towards
campaign finance reform.
"I'm fresh and new and not really
spoiled by government, which is a help
because people can be really cynical at
times," Powers said prior to election day.
He also praised the Democratic Party
for aiding in his campaign.
"The Democratic party really opened
its doors to us," Power said on Monday.
Power will most likely not be the next
House member in seat 75, but he will
be able to use the experience as a building
block.

"Ibis has been a tremendous learning

that are put on these people."
One of the contributing factors that
led to his probable election loss may have
been Power's decision not to accept political
action committee (PAC) money to help
fund his campaign.
"We didn't take any PAC money,"
Power said. "It was very important to
us. We wanted an old-fashioned, grassroots
campaign."
Power has already worked for the
National Park Service and serves on the
South Carolina Sierra Club Board of
Directors, according to a prior article in
The Gamecock.
Power was backed by the U5C Young
Democrats, who helped with Power's
campaign.
"Young kids played a vital part in
this campaign," Power said on Monday.
He was also hoping that his very
public campaign would help people get
to know him, and then remember him
at the noils.
"What people want to know is that
I'm straight," Power said on Monday.

"I'm going to listen to them. We may
disagree on issues, but [the fact that I'm
going to listen] is what they really care
aDout.
Power will more than likely be denied
this run at the South Carolina House
seat, but at only 26 years of age, there
will be other opportunities.
"My youth has been a great benefit
to me. I've got ideas and convictions,
and that turns my youth into a positive.
I'm out there fighting for not only people
my age, but for others, too," Power said.
"I really think I can go wherever I
want to go with this," Power said about
his experience with politics.
However, Power is extremely
interested in changing things at the state
level.
"It will take me a while to go
anywhere from here, because I have
things I want to accomplish at the state
level first," Power said Monday.
Asked for a reaction on WLTX after
it was pretty clear he would not win the
election, Power said, "We really got into
this race to make a point- to make Jim
Harrison accountable."
"Win or lose," Power said to WLTX,
"we ran a good, clean race."
