w . 4 Community MARGARET WOWEIi Staff Writer How is this for reality? Eight rapes have been committed to USC students since 1991, according to the Carolina Community handbook. In addition, one in four females are raped during their college careers, according to USC's Sexual Assault Services. Rapes are rarely reported because they are so traumatic. Proving rape in the court of law is a long and arduous process that can end up causing even more emotional damage to the rape survivor. Rape survivors can do little for themselves to aid in their recoveries. I'm shamed by how little I know about the Web and how incredibly complex things are; Fm struck by a kind of societal "math is Hard" mindset. Personally, I have never heard anyone speak knowledgeably about the Web as the high-tech aid of anything in particular, perhaps because it is not. After several calming cups of coffee, I decided that I would tiy to answer sane of the more irritating questions and also to attempt to clear up some of my own confusion without the benefit of media hype. The idea of the Web itself started in simple circumstances. I Survivors need support to be able to get on with their lives. There is a support system to help victims of rape overcome the trauma. This support system is the Rape Crisis Network. The Rape Crisis Network is a nonprofit agency in Columbia whose sole purpose is to support the survivors of sexual assault. Through volunteer advocates, RCN is able to offer support groups, a hotline and support during the hospital medical exam?all at no change to the clients. RCN served 566 survivors of violent crime last year. A third of these survivors were children under the age of 18, and 80 percent were assaulted by an 4 hasirs of i v/a of sending out plain text as well as pretty pictures. These BflRB computers are the "web servers" and their purpose is simply to wait for somebody to request this data. The Internet just happens to be the set of interconnected computers |H| (the "network") on which ItUnm the Web is based. It makes no sense to REJESH1 refer to the two as separate or equal entities; one is abstract, the other is hardware. In order to see the pictures and text on your own computer, you need a program that will talk to a specific server ova* the network. Usually, you can request the server to send you this data in blocks called "web pages" and display it on your own computer screen. This program (called "the browser'') is mostly what creates the impression of "surfing" through a vast stream of information. McMurray said he feels volunteering for RCN is a rewarding experience. "It is very satisfying to know that you are making a difference in one person's life," McMurray said. RCN is holding its training session for volunteer advocates Oct. 26 and 27, and Nov. 2 and 3 In order to complete training, interested volunteers must complete an application, submit references, complete a background check and pay a small fee.. These double as pointers to webH servers. When you click on a link with your mouse, the iwwmg browser simply repeats the process requested by the EHANDRAN link. The browser thai finds a computer in a process similar to the one used to identify a telephone on a network (i.e. www.dave.dot.com is sort of like 1-800MARINES). Hyper-links provide a moreor-less seamless path between pages on the same or a different server. This is simple enough, I would think. Images, animation sequences, sounds and all of the other snazzy details that define a web page are superficial in terms of what they add to the above process. All the complications and hightechnology (if any) are embodied by the browser. The 26-hour training will be comprehensive. Counselors will discuss the trauma of rape and the recovery process. Law enforcement will also be discussed. Volunteers will learn basic counseling skills, discuss how to deal with clients with addictions and how to,deal with homeless clients. Survivors of rape will speak, as will prosecutors of rape cases. Emergency room tours and a discussion of the medical exam are also part of the training process. RCN volunteers are thoroughly trained to offer the best support possible to survivors. The network is looking for 7ide Web server, then you've got animation. If these images happen to be some representation of sound and the browser can "display" sound, you've got audio. The servers and the "Web" as such are not (in my opinion) even close to the bleeding edge of technology today. Most of these ideas have been around for ages in one form or another and have only just begun to seep into commercial reality. One cautionary note?it is usually a bad idea to get one of those huge books that claims to be able to teach you everything you need to know in 18 days or so. The trick of the Web is to not take anything you hear for granted If someone uses a term you don't understand, ask for clarification. I am generally waiy of anybody who uses the "buzz-words of the month" and seems to be knowledgeable about the Web. The RCN program is one of the few volunteer opportunities in Lexington, Richland and Newberry Counties that allows individuals to provide direct support to victims of violent crime.
