4 Conductor graduation SUSAN MEYERS Staff Writer After walking across the stage, many students raised their arms in the shape of a "V" for victory. Other students walked with tears and smiles of joy. Summer graduation ceremonies were held August 10 in the Carolina Coliseum. A npnnrntA reremnnv for dnctnrnl ??J ? ? candidates was held that morning at the Roger Center. USC awarded more than 1,700 degrees to graduates from all of its eight campuses, including three associates degrees, 600 bachelor's degrees, five medical degrees, two law degrees, 659 graduate degrees and 144 doctoral degrees from the Columbia campus. Robert L. Shaw, music director emeritus and conductor laureate of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, was honored for his accomplishments as a conductor and musician and received an honorary doctor of music degree. Shaw was joined by banking executive James H. Blanchard of Atlanta, who received an honorary doctor of business administration degree and S.C. native and artist Jonathan Green, who received an honorary doctor of fine arts degree. Shaw spoke during the commencement exercises and urged the graduates to maintain their appreciation for fine arts once they moved into their occupations.
