A NOTIC The Uni Bring I It used to be that not every student wanted an email account or internet access. But A these days, with computing and the internet being glamorized on the big screen by the likes of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves, more and more people are wanting to find H out what's out there for them on the infor- H mation superhighway. To aid in that quest, all students registered at H USC for the Fall 1995 semester have been H automatically assigned a free computer id on H the university's mainframe computer system, called CMS, for email and internet access. Those students having CMS accounts in previous semesters will retain them. To help students learn about their new com- I puter ids, here are answers to some of the most I frequently asked questions: I How do I find out my computer id and U password? M To determine your CMS computer id and M password, you should call TIPS (2-8477 K on campus, 251-8477 off campus). You m ^ can also call or come by the Computer " Services Center at 777-7236 (7-7236 on campus). Please note the security and password issues concerning CMS discussed later in this article. I What if I wasn't assigned a nnmnnfar | VV/llip UiVl IV* If you were not eligible to register at USC as of August 15, you may not have been I g* assigned an id. In this case, you can I come by the Computer Services Center between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. weekdays (until 8:00 p.m. after 9/4/95) with your USC id to request a computer id. The center is located in the first floor lobby of Computer Services at the corner of Blossom and Sumter streets. (In the coming weeks, a new online system will also be available to allow you to request a userid, and to reset your password should you forget it.) How do I access my CMS id? Your CMS id can be accessed from many public computing labs on campus, as you can see in the table on this page. You can also access CMS via the internet (hostname: univscvm.csd.sc.edu or 129.252.41.4; a 3270 emulation of telnet is required?ask a lab assistant for help if you have problems) and via modem (777-8332, settings: 7-1-E, up to 9600 baud). Shareware and site-licensed communications packages are available from the Computer Services Center. Just bring a diskette by for a copy and access instructions. What can I do with my CMS computer id? First of all, immediately change your personal identification number (PIN) with option three rom the main menu on TIPS. Your PIN number, in combilation with your social security number, is the key that aldws you to get your grades, change your schedule, and eset your email password online. So, change your default 'IN as soon as possible. Next, when you logon to CMS or the first time, the system will require that you change our default password to a new password. Be smart about icking a CMS password. Don't make it your dog's name t the name of your significant other. Make it something ard to guess, like an acronym. An example would be egbdf' as a password. It stands for Every Good Boy Does rine. It is a password that you can easily remember but tiat no one else can easily guess. When choosing this new assword, note that it must be five to eight characters in jngth and that the first character must be a letter.
