[PEOPLE PLA CAROLINA McCormk Roadtrip is rambling up the highway this weekend to historic McCormick County, which is several miles west off Columbia on U.S. 378 Almost every place in McCormick County is a stone's throw from a creek, river or Lake Thurmond. If you couple Lake Thurmond with the Savannah River, three state parks, four Army Corps of Engineer campgrounds and four dayuse parks, you can see why McCormick is often called the gem of South Carolina's freshwater coast. The other side of Mccormick's recreational coin is a wealth of forests, which cover 94.2 percent of the County's land area. Sportsmen from all over the country are drawn to the County's woods to hunt for white-tailed deer and wild turkeys. One of the best mind-bending activities in the County is a drive along the Savannah River Scenic Highway, which rins the entire length of the County through the towns that developed as a result of early commerce along the Savannah River and the Savannah Valley Railroad. The highway rambles alongside Lake Thurmond, through the forests and into the towns of: Ml Carmel ? a national historic district; Willington ? a near ghost town; McCormick ? shop as you walk down sidewalks built over miles of gold mine tunnels; don't miss the fountain Cokes at Strom's drugstore. Plum Branch?try the French cuisine; Parksville ? watch the sun set on Lake Thurmond; Modoc ? named for the Modoc Indians of Oregon; and Clarks Hill ? the Dam and Visitors Center are the highlight of this community.
