"Diets don't work," said Dr. Cas Ryan, a registered dietitian and assc date professor of USCs medical school "Most people go on deprivation diets and as soon as they go off the diet, the} feel entitled to eat the things that the} have deprived themselves of having. Before they know it, most peopli have gained back the weight they strug gled to lose. "In the end, deprivation leads to frus tration and eventual failure to main tain the weight loss," Ryan said. In fact, many people who try to los< weight find themselves in a lifelong bat tie of losing and gaining weight, an un healthy cycle called "yo-yo dieting," sht said. "As a nation, people are getting Digger as a result ol deprivation diets,' Ryan said. So, what is the solution? The first step is to assess why the weight gain has occurred. Begin by examining changes in eating habits, including the kinds of foods that have become part of your life, Ryan said. "When you can, reduce your intake of fat, sugar and salt," she said. "It's a good way to showcase Columbia,' Parker-Medlin said. "It gives you a differer perspective. You feel like you're in the city Columbia, but when you're on the water y can't even see the city.
