Want to lose weight in 1995?
Start by saying "no" to dieting, sail
a nutrition expert at the USC Schoc
of Medicine.
"Diets don't work," said Dr. Cas
Ryan, a registered dietitian and assc
date professor of USCs medical school
"Most people go on deprivation diets
and as soon as they go off the diet, the}
feel entitled to eat the things that the}
have deprived themselves of having.
Before they know it, most peopli
have gained back the weight they strug
gled to lose.
"In the end, deprivation leads to frus
tration and eventual failure to main
tain the weight loss," Ryan said.
In fact, many people who try to los<
weight find themselves in a lifelong bat
tie of losing and gaining weight, an un
healthy cycle called "yo-yo dieting," sht
said. "As a nation, people are getting
Digger as a result ol deprivation diets,'
Ryan said.
So, what is the solution?
The first step is to assess why the
weight gain has occurred. Begin by examining
changes in eating habits, including
the kinds of foods that have become
part of your life, Ryan said.
"When you can, reduce your intake
of fat, sugar and salt," she said.

Another step in losing weight is eatg
ing only when hungry. Also, consider
h your level of physical activity.
[ "Most people gain weight because
they become more inactive," Ryan said.
y The key to increasing physical acy
tivity in your life is finding the type of
" exercise that you will participate in on
s a regular basis, whether it is walking,
gardening, swimming or riding bicycle. I
"Physical activity is very beneficial I
- and very important," Ryan said. "It does |
- not have to be an intense routine at the |
gym. Look for an activity that you en- I

If you really want to lose those ex- I
- tra pounds, Ryan offers these tips to
i help you lose the weight and keep off
[ those extra pounds:
Don't feast then fast. !
Eat sensibly, and don't think about
losing the weight in a month's time. If
! it takes six months or a year to lose the
weight, that's OK The important thing
is to make changes that you can live
with.
Establish a program of physical
activity that you enjoy and that fits your
lifestyle.
