TOUCHBERRY Columnist It has been over & week now since the resounding Kepuoncan victory, out 1 am still pumped. I didn't even get that upset Saturday when the Cocks were bludgeoned by Florida (my friends all know this is quite unusual!) Although the liberal media and President Clinton have tried to put their own spin on the election results, I don't believe the American people are buying it. Today, I am going to give you a brief analysis of the election and provide my insight and opinion about why the Republican victory was so tremendous. Much of my election research was provided by the Voter News Service. I believe the GOP landslide was caused by five basic factors: (1) concern over family values and moral decay, (2) realignment in the south, (3) "better informed" voters, (4) belief that Republicans are sincere, and (5) Bill Clinton. Now, let me explain each , of these factors. First, concern over moral decay and the need to return to more traditional values was a key to the Republican victory. Two-thirds of voters ranked this as either their most or second most important issue. Beginning with Ronald Reagan's presidency the GOP has been aligning itself as the party of "mainstream" traditional values. The fact that 60% of Protestants and 58% of all Christians voted Republican indicates that pro-family policies played a role in the election. Secondly, the party realignment taking place throughout the South greatly influenced the GOP victory. The South has been under a slow transition that began with the Goldwater-Johnson election of 1964. Republicans have been winning the South in national elections consistently for three decades. But, this year for the first time Republicans now own a majority of Senators and U.S. Representatives in the South. The GOP now has an even split among governors. Most races won by Democrats in the South (not including predominantly black districts) were by very narrow margins, while many GOP victories were quite large. The Carolinas and Tennessee have become Republican strongholds. By 19%, I suspect the "solid South" will be back intact, this time being solidly "Republican." Thirdly, voters were more informed than ever in 1994, providing must support "TBaffcod; S Student Media Russell House-USO < Lee Clontz Allison Williams Editor in Chief Features Editor Susan Goodwin Jimmy DeButts Viewpoints Editor Sports Editor Steven C. The increase in conservative media such as Rush Limbaugh nave given voters more man one viewpoint to listen to. The education supplied by the Christian Coalition's voter guides also helped greatly. As one survey conducted last week indicated, more voters trust the conservative media as compared to the "mainstream" liberal media when it comes to accuracy and truthfulness. Fourthly, Republicans undertook a great effort on the national level to inform voters of their specific agenda With the "Contract with America" Republicans outlined their positions on most of the important issues of the day and they told voters exactly what they would do in the first 100 days if elected into the majority. The GOP gave the voters a sincere pledge to which the voters could hold them accountable. Voters appeared to support this "fresh" idea overwhelmingly. Finally, the voters sent a clear message with the elected Republican majority: stop Bill Clinton's leftist agenda! Every major poll has shown that voters want the government out of their private lives as much as possible. The Republicans have a clear i:? Iliaiiuaic lU liivufwc cuaiigc uiai win iiuui government, reduce the bureaucracy and stop the expansion of government that has taken place over the past half-century. Contrary to what the President and media are saying, Republicans have not been sent to Washington to agree with Bill Clinton. We don't elect one party into power to advocate policies of the other party. Furthermore, the poll conducted by CNN/Time used loaded questions. Of course, Americans want Congress and the President to work together. But, the majority of Americans would like to see Clinton move to the right, not the Republicans move to the left.
