The 1994 Homecoming Con mission put on an array of activity that captured the spirit and excifc ment of the entire Carolina Con munity. The activities ranged froi the carnival to the halftime recoj ration of student organizations, ar the key theme I recognized in all i the homecoming activities was d versity. In past homecoming even you rarely saw minority involvemei or participation but that change this year. During the halftime recognitic of organizations, Delta Sigma Thet an African-American sorority, wc the Community Service Award f their outstanding work in the Ca olina Community. Alpha Phi Alph an African-American fraternity, i so had a major role in Homecomh '94. The Alphas co-sponsored tl First Annual Street Jam on Greei Street Friday night. The Street Ja was coordinated by Jenny Wu, ai she did a fantastic job with an eve in its first year of existence. Tl Street Jam appealed directly African-American students and was a huge success. Over 600 st dents danced and parti ed on Gre< Street to the sounds of Big DM I Curtis Wilson. The Alphas also won the flo competition. I hope in the next several years USC's Homecoming activities can grow into events like those at Clemson University and ^ the University of Florida where Homecoming is looked upon as a major campus event )n Another Homecoming activity that was outstanding was the pain rade. Co-chairs Julye Johns and or Marie Lovelace did an outstanding ir- job in the second year of the return ta, of the parade. It was good to see so d- many students come out and enjoy ig the floats, the marching band and ie all the other units in the parade. The le highlight of the parade had to be the m emcee Trav Robertson, his quick wit and his cutting sarcasm were amusnt ing and pleasing to the crowd. Next ^ e year I hope the parade will be largt er and grander. Last week showed that if the entire community pulls together, it can u" do anything. It also showed that the ^ Carolina Community is diverse, and ^ we should show that to the City ol Columbia and the alumni, not just at during Homecoming Week, but every ig- week. We are almost halfway to Thanksgiving, and no one has written in to complain about the content of my columns or my political leanings. What's the matter with you people? Every Monday, I get pulled aside in the hallways and am offered suggestions about how I can improve my column. As a public service, I will use some of this space to answer the questions most frequently asked of me: 1. Why don't you bash other Gamecock columnists? That's what "Letters to the Editor" are for. Have a look at it. 2. Why don't you bash former Gamecock editor Tige Watts, who displayed his ignorance (again) on the editorial page of Wednesday's paper? Two reasons. First, I just don't have enough space to do it properly.
