Jewish or- ? ganizations have protested a decision f' by the University of Miami's student f newspaper to publish an ad that ques- ? tions whether gas chambers were used at Nazi concentration camps. v 6 A petition containing 202 signatures F was presented to The Miami Hurri- d -cane the day before publication. Stustents, alumni and residents of the Mi- d ami area, which is home to many sur- t( vivors of the Holocaust, asked the <newspaper not to run the ad, which a they said was "blatantly anti-Semitic, v hurtful and offensive to all of us." o , The quarter-page ad, purchased by ti Bradley Smith on behalf of the Com- S mittee for Open Debate on the Holo- n caust, ran April 12, just days after c ^Holocaust Remembrance Day, estab- t( lished to remember the 6 million Jews a and others who died in the Holo- v caust. Prayers, vigils and the continuous reading of names of Jewish vie- d tims marked the international occa- h sion. d *' Meanwhile, the Central Florida Fu- a 'ture, an off-campus publication distributed to University of Central Flori- ti da students, also came under fire for d publishing a similar ad. a - "The First Amendment is not ques- p tionable," Miami Hurricane Editor S Lynette Malinger said.
