Tampa's NBA hopes crushed A $100,000 check from the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey franchise and area businessman Vince Naimoli for an expansion application recently was returned by the NBA. The return of the check practically ensures that the Tampa Bay area will not receive an expansion team anytime in the future. Unfortunately, the city is building a $110-million arena in the downtown area. Raines' milestone win came on an unusual day at Sarge Frye Field. "It was a weird ballgame," he said. "You look out there (on the scoreboard)...36 runs, 40 hits, Five errors...it sounds like a football game. It was a weird weekend for freshman Craig Dour as well. Dour led the Gamecock offensive explosion Saturday with a pair of home runs. The shortstop from Palm Harbour, Fla., hit a solo shot and a two-run homer. The second home run landed around second base on the Lady Gamecocks' softball field beyond the left-field fence of Frye Field. as a team, me uamecocics scored in each of the first six innings Saturday, including four runs in each the first and fourth and five runs in each the second and third. Ten USC players got hits Saturday, and seven players had a multiple-hit game. Freshman Randy Stegall, making a start at third base, hit a home run and added three singles while driving in five baserunners. His five RBIs on the day more than doubled his season total. Stegall missed much of the first half of the season with a broken finger. Catcher Brian Hucks went 2-for-3 and drove in five runs. The sophomore from Lexington hit a grand slam and a run-scoring double. USC registered 24 hits on the afternoon: four home runs, four dou bles, 16 singles and a triple by senior Mac White. White, a Charlotte, N.C., native, tied the USC record for career triples with 12, to go along with his career doubles record. White scored five times on the day as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of walks. The offensive outburst didn't have Raines worried about a letdown. "Everybody says, 'Well, you've got to save a few,'" he said. "But you don't have to save up hits. You've got to go out and swing the bat, and that's what we did." Despite the run support, Gamecock starting pitcher Jim Stoops couldn't last long enough to pick up the win. Stoops pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up eight earned runs on nine hits. He walked five and struck out three. Sophomore Ted Rose pitched the final 4 1/3 innings to pick up the win, giving up four runs on seven hits. The St. Clairsville, Ohio, native also went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in four runs.
