Ms %JvF Technically speaking, a pitcher T Ohirt Rat earns a save by doing two things: 1) He pitches three innings in Giveaway Giveaway relief 0 ^ H 2) He enters a game in which wO I I vJ his team is leading by no more than three runs and proceeds to stop the opposing team from scorf-! Well, you are absolutely right! It's not a very impressive statistic. ricr ;? 1 qoq The norms for a "good" closer mg to use in lyoo, ? , . .. , are usually along these lines: The s a graduate assistant pitcher must have 30-plus saves, an h at Tennessee under ERA below 3.0 and an attitude. imitt. Darn it!" I am not saying closers are unnecessary on a team. Teams that have them should be content, but teams that don't shouldn't panic. It is possible to win without them. How? Look at the Atlanta Braves' pitching staff. The top four starters have three Cy Young Awards and one strikeout title among them. They usually pitch more than 220 innings apiece a season. My math isn't that great, so I can't give you an average of how much that is per game, but something tells me the Braves don't need a closer when their starters are pitching seven or eight innings a start. "But not all teams have a rotation like Atlanta's." i tiai o ii^Uk, UUl Id II AUA1I14 d fault? Just kidding... Look at the great teams of the past: the 1927 Yankees; the 1970 Athletics; the 1951 Dodgers. I don't recall seeing Rolaids Relief winners on those teams. They won because they had great offenses, played great defense and were managed by great coaches. Teams can win without closers. Acquiring a closer should not be the No. 1 objective on a general manager's mind. He should worry about things such as keeping tick et prices low and signing players to low-term contracts. He shouldn't worry about what prospects to give up so his team will have a "dominant" stopper.
