^ O What exactly is a save anyway?
Ms %JvF Technically speaking, a pitcher

1) He pitches three innings in

you are absolutely right! It's not a

won that award, but that blown

out of contention! Darn it!"
I am not saying closers are unnecessary
on a team. Teams that
have them should be content, but
teams that don't shouldn't panic.
It is possible to win without them.
How?
Look at the Atlanta Braves' pitching
staff. The top four starters have
three Cy Young Awards and one
strikeout title among them. They
usually pitch more than 220 innings
apiece a season.
My math isn't that great, so I
can't give you an average of how
much that is per game, but something
tells me the Braves don't
need a closer when their starters
are pitching seven or eight innings
a start.
"But not all teams have a rotation
like Atlanta's."

fault? Just kidding...
Look at the great teams of the
past: the 1927 Yankees; the 1970
Athletics; the 1951 Dodgers. I don't
recall seeing Rolaids Relief winners
on those teams. They won because
they had great offenses,
played great defense and were
managed by great coaches.
Teams can win without closers.
Acquiring a closer should not be
the No. 1 objective on a general
manager's mind. He should worry
about things such as keeping tick
et prices low and signing players to
low-term contracts. He shouldn't
worry about what prospects to give
up so his team will have a "dominant"
stopper.
