use spli By TONY SANTORI Sports Editor The USC baseball team split the first two games of a three-game set against Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss. The Gamecocks (26-11, 4-4) took Friday night's contest 5-0 but fell to the Bulldogs 6-4 Saturday. Senior Scott Pace bounced back from his first loss of the season last weekend by limiting Mississippi State to four hits in 7 1/3 innings of work Friday. Pace (8-1) walked six to go along with the four singles he gave up, he but received outstanding defensive support as the Gamecocks turned three double plays and committed no errors. USC got on the board in the third courtesy of a Bulldog error that allowed shortstop Ryan Szwejbka to reach base. Marie Gugino then tripled, driving in Szwejbka. USC scored its other runs in the sixth. The Gamecocks parlayed three walks, a sacrifice and three singles into four runs. Mac White, Szwejbka and Randy Stegall singled to drive in runs. Ste gall, a iresnman inira baseman who made his first collegiate start after missing 35 games with an injury, drove in two runs on a pair of hits. Craig Ross retired the final five batters of the game after Pace gave up a one-out single in the eighth. The combined shutout marked the first time MSU had been held scoreless in 66 games. FZ . ~ . USC scored single runs in the first and fourth and two in the second to take a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs' fourrun rally in the bottom of the fourth came courtesy of only two hits. Mississippi State scored the go ahead run in the sixth when David Hayman led off with a double and scored on Brian Clarke's single. Scott Davidson singled to drive in Clarke for an insurance run. J.J. Pearsall (1-3), pitching in relief of USC starter Jim Stoops, took the loss. Carlton Loewer (4-3) won for MSU, and Scott Tansley picked up his seventh save of the season. Gugino was the bright spot offensively for USC on the afternoon with three singles and three runs scored. White and Stokes both added two hits as well. The Gamecocks and Bulldogs battled again Sunday afternoon in Starkville. Results will appear in Wednesday's edition of The Game cock. Upstate rival Clemson will come Wednesday to Sarge Frye Field to tangle with USC. The Gamecocks and Tigers split their first two meetings this season. Not once have 1 seen any of the tennis players taunting an opponent or crying about their lack of playing time. Not all of the USC male athletes are egomaniacs. Baseball catcher/football fullback Rob DeBoer is a notable exception. He passed up a contract with the Blue Jays to return for his senior year and play football. "People don't understand," DeBoer said earlier in the year. "I love this game.1" Unfortunately for the sports fan, DeBoer is the exception to the rule. So those of you out there who are purists, and watch the game because you love it and not to see the athletes hotdog and showboat, do yourselves a favor. Go see a women's athletics event.
