Milla's Divii By LUPE EYDE * Staff Writer % "The Divine Comedy" is the debut album byMillaJovovich, a 17-year-old model from Eastern Europe who began modeling when she was 12. If you don't recognize her name, .you surely will her face because it's been everywhere, from Almay commercials to movies to magazines. And now, she wants to be recognized for more: her music. Milla's music is impressive for her first time out. She writes her own poetry/lyrics, sings in a voice that sounds far more mature than her age, and in^ corporates music from her culture with a variety ot instruments. For this, Rolling Stone gave her album threeand-a-half stars, and deservedly so, because unlike your typical model, she aspires to be seen for more than her body and looks. This is a gutsy thing, since we all know how the public reacts to models becoming actresses, musicians, artists, etc. But in 'The Divine Comedy," Milla's not afraid to bare her mind and soul. In the album's first track, "The Alien Song (for those who % Gin Blossom By ANGIE CAMPBELL Staff Writer With all of the Counting Crows, Lemoi Smashing Pumpkins out there, it was or of time before a band named Gin Bloss< scene. H Even though I give Milla a thumbs up for her project, I have mixed feelings about the actual music. Don't get me wrong. It's very pretty, mystical, filled with acoustic guitars, a lot, and I mean A LOT of keyboards, and an occasional violin or oboe. The whole album sounds very orchestrated. Her voice is very pretty, a bit esoteric, like Kate Bush's, and accented like Sarah McLaughlan's. The only problem is that all of these elements combine to make really good jlj music to sleep to. I had a hard time listening all the way through to the end, and then stay awake long enough to write this review. However, don't be surprised if you hear Milla on your local alternative radio station (which Columbia doesn't have, not counting WUSC), or if you ^ see a video on MTV by this beauty. B Her nrsi single win probably be either "Gentlemen Who Fell," "It's Your Life" or "Bang Your Head," since they're the liveliest ones on the whole album. s hit scene wi tually a refreshing change to t music making its way across "7 ~ ~ While their most notable song iheads and and ?Found 0ut t You," ly a matter phenomenal amounts of airtii jms hit the actually such songs as "Allisoi Fall Away" that give this albun nee," is ac- The Gin Blossoms seem to | fl " | ''f V \ I ?'
