INC. mecock USC to battle for third tim< By JIMMY DcBUTTS Assistant Sports Editor The USC baseball team will take on The Citadel at 7 p.m. today at Sarge Frye Field. The Gamecocks are 1-1 against the Bulldogs this season. Each team has won at home, and tonight's game will decide the season series. The Gamecocks are coming off a weekend series in which they took two of three games from the Alabama Crimson Tide. "We lost on Friday, but I'm pleased we bounced back to win on Saturday and Sunday," Coach June Raines said. The Gamecocks (23-7, 2-1) finished the weekend series Sunday with a 32 win. Wally Maynard picked up the win to improve to 3-0. He pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings, striking out two. "Our pitching staff has been consistent this year," Raines said. "I was glad to see Maynard get the win." Starting pitcher Scott Pace (7-0) pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Craig Ross picked up his seventh save of the year by pitching a no-hit ninth. Offensively, the Gamecocks were led by leftfielder Mark Gugino and designated hitter Mike Tarter.
