Senior Ron Willis led the men's team, placing first in the hammer with a provisional qualifying distance of 212-11. He also provisionally qualified in the discus with a first-place throw of 180-8 to set a meet record. Gamecocks Chad Moreau placed second in the discus with a distance of 179. In the men's hammer, USC had four athletes throw provisional qualification distances, with John Stoikos coming in second with 207-4, followed by Brett Murray in fourth with 195-3 and Lavon Page in fifth with 195-3. Other top finishers for the Gamecocks were Derek McMillan, who set a school record in the javelin with a distance of 208-3; Mark Cruz, who placed first in the 5,000m; and Frank Smoke RESERVE OF!
