The USC men's and women's track
teams, which opened their 1994 outdoor
season Saturday as the hosts of
the Weems Baskin Memorial Invitational,
recorded eight provisional
qualifiers and broke seven school
records.
Senior Ron Willis led the men's
team, placing first in the hammer with
a provisional qualifying distance of
212-11. He also provisionally qualified
in the discus with a first-place throw
of 180-8 to set a meet record.
Gamecocks Chad Moreau placed
second in the discus with a distance
of 179.
In the men's hammer, USC had
four athletes throw provisional qualification
distances, with John Stoikos
coming in second with 207-4, followed
by Brett Murray in fourth with
195-3 and Lavon Page in fifth with
195-3.
Other top finishers for the Gamecocks
were Derek McMillan, who set
a school record in the javelin with a
distance of 208-3; Mark Cruz, who
placed first in the 5,000m; and Frank
Smoke
