According to Hodge, the com- ] mission had never voted on a can- ] didate for chancellor prior to < Nelms. I i The first chief executive officer i of USCS was Olin Sansbury, who i was appointed chief administrator in 1973. Sansbury resigned in < August. I William "Jack" Whitener was ; appointed interim chancellor Sept. i 1. "We didn't vote then because he 1 (Sansbury) was already interim ) chancellor for a year, and he was doing a great job," Hodge said. Davis said the faculty senate passed a resolution recently supporting Nelms because he was recammended by the search committee, which included four members of the commission. "They (Commission members) had adequate time to express their opinions earlier," Davis said. He said the vote was inappropriate because the ex-officio members of the commission are notified prior to meetings but were not notified prior to the Oct. 16 meeting when the votes were cast. "They (ex-officio members) only need to be notified if there's a reason for them to be there," Hodge said. "They wouldn't have a vote anyway." However, Rob Moore, editor in chief of the USCS student newspaper, The Carolinian, said the vote was unnecessary because the commission doesn't serve in a decisionmatino ranaritv "'w?0 ?r J . inued from page 1 you get sick of vacuuming, but you have to do it so the bugs stay away." Hodge said there were other candidates who were more qualified than Nelms and the two most important things he looks for in a chancellor are public relations and fund-raising skills. However, Nelms said he hasn't heard any basis for why he wasn't the best qualified candidate. He said he won't call it racism because only the commission members who voted know whether race was a factor. "I don't have any negative feelings," Nelms said. "I'm disappointed but not bitter. As an African American, you learn to live with disappointment and move on." A new search committee is expected to be formed, and Davis said it will be about another year before a chancellor is appointed. the expenses is the most important part of living off campus," Roe said.
