the commission expressed its opin- ;

According to Hodge, the com- ]

Nelms. I

of USCS was Olin Sansbury, who

in 1973. Sansbury resigned in <

I William "Jack" Whitener was

"We didn't vote then because he

doing a great job," Hodge said.

'I find it hard to believe that a
search committee would take an
jntire year and recommend a man
who was not qualified."
Davis said the faculty senate
passed a resolution recently supporting
Nelms because he was recammended
by the search committee,
which included four members
of the commission.
"They (Commission members)
had adequate time to express their
opinions earlier," Davis said.
He said the vote was inappropriate
because the ex-officio members
of the commission are notified prior
to meetings but were not notified
prior to the Oct. 16 meeting
when the votes were cast.
"They (ex-officio members) only
need to be notified if there's a reason
for them to be there," Hodge
said. "They wouldn't have a vote
anyway."
However, Rob Moore, editor in
chief of the USCS student newspaper,
The Carolinian, said the vote
was unnecessary because the commission

"It disturbs me because there's
talk about how he's (Nelms) not
qualified for the job, but I haven't
heard an explanation as to why he
isn't the best candidate," Moore
said.
Hodge said there were other candidates
who were more qualified
than Nelms and the two most
important things he looks for in a
chancellor are public relations and
fund-raising skills.
However, Nelms said he hasn't
heard any basis for why he wasn't
the best qualified candidate.
He said he won't call it racism
because only the commission members
who voted know whether race
was a factor.
"I don't have any negative feelings,"
Nelms said. "I'm disappointed
but not bitter. As an African
American, you learn to live with
disappointment and move on."
A new search committee is
expected to be formed, and Davis
said it will be about another year
before a chancellor is appointed.

part of living off campus," Roe
said. "If you bounce a check and
that check happens to be your rent
' money, then you're not going to be
1 happy and neither is the person
' you're renting from."
"There is a lot to think about
| when you live off campus, and
! there is tons of responsibility, but I
t like it better," Josephson said. "So
I have to do a few dishes and cook
