With the 1993 season half over, the Gamecocks own a 3-4 record. The first half of the season has been characterized by a great last minute comeback at Georgia, a couple of disappointing losses, two blowouts and an outstanding effort against defending national champions Alabama. Now, it is time to look at the Gamecocks position by position and judge their performances so far. Quarterback ? Steve Taneyhill came into the season as the center of attention after engineering the amazing second half turnaround in 1992. | He started off this year by leading the Gamecocks to a last second, upset win at Georgia. Since then, however, Taneyhill has been plagued by inconsistency. He has thrown eight interceptions and only four touchdowns. However, there have been some dropped balls by the receivers, and his protection has broken down at times. Despite some or ms receni troubles, Taneyhill has performed adequately and is still the leader of the offense. Blake Williamson provides the Gamecocks with a solid backup. For the second half of the season, Taneyhill needs to step up his play if the Gamecocks are to be successful against the likes of Florida, Tennessee and Clemson. Taneyhill is an outstanding leader, and if he can cut down on the interceptions and improve his consistency, he will enjoy a good second half of the season. Grade ? C Runningbacks ? This position has been a strength for the Gamecocks this year. Brandon Bennett has been outstanding so far. He is the team's leading rusher and is one of the top backs in the SEC. Stanley Pritchet has been a pleasant surprise with his tough running. Although captain Rob DeBoer hasn't carried the ball much, he is a terrific lead blocker and has KaIoc fnr T) onnott Thirri IlClpCU U^CII up UI5 iJV/iwo 1V/I x^v^iiiivii. A??v# down back Mike Reddick has been a super receiver out of the backfield and is one of Taneyhill's favorite targets. This is one of th youngest and most inexperienced positions o the team. However, it is also a steadily impro> ing and talented group. Toby Cates has been th top receiver so far. Chris Alford has also suj plied some big plays. Young receivers such < Monty Means, Marcus Robinson and Core Bridges are extremely talented, but they are als inexperienced. There have been too many dropped balls, bi the corps of receivers has improved week t week. Injuries to Asim Penny have huff. Tt receivers need to continue to develop an improve, and there is no question they will c both with more experience. Grade ? C Offensive Line ? The offensive line was < area of concern heading into the seasoi However, the line jelled early in the year ai has performed well. The quintet of Luthi Dixon, James Dexter, Vincent Dinkens, Jol Harrison and Corey Louchiey has perform* above expectations. Although there have been some lapses in pa protection, the run blocking has been super Tight ends Matthew Campbell and Boom Foster have also blocked well. The line needs continue to open up holes for the runningbacl and they need to give Taneyhill more time. Li] most positions on the team, the line is youi and inexperienced but improving. Grade ? B Defensive line ? The defensive line has p* formed well. Eric Sullivan and Jahmal Pettifo have been solid at nose guard and right en respectively. Stacy Evans has been a pleasa surprise. He will have to step up even more nc that David Turnipseed has been lost for the ye because of an injury. The line has been strong against the run far. The line will need to get more of a pa rush against Florida and Tennessee. The secoi half of the season poses a great challenge to t line without Turnipseed. The line is looking 1 t? impress pflQj :h was 50 points better Both the wor osest competitor. The Gamecock Ci team was led by Sue IXfffllB ho captured first place MlliNH idual three-mile race. Grade ? B e Linebackers ? This is a position where the n Gamecocks are talented and deep. Captain Ernest Dixon is the leader of this group from his >e outside linebacker spot. James Flowers and >- Chris Rumph have played well at the other out15 side backer spot. In the middle, Eric Brown, y Mike Landry, Aubrey Brooks and Ronnie Smith ? have been good. Hopefully, a healthy Hank Campbell will return in the second half to add even more quality depth. The linebackers need >y to continue to perform at the level they have for ie the defense to continue to be successful. 1{* Grade ? B+ '? Defensive Backs ? The defensive backfield is among the most talented in the SEC. Frank Adams, Tony Watkins, Norman Greene and m Ron Nealy have been outstanding. They have n, performed well against the pass and the run. I Although they haven't combined for many inter~r ceptions, their courage has been good. Greene and Watkins are among the team leaders in ' tackles. If the defensive backs can continue their ss outstanding play against the run and intercept a K few more passes, they will continue to excel in er the second half. t0 Grade ? B+ s Special Teams ? The special teams have performed adequately the first half. Kicker Reed ^ Morton has been a good, consistent place kicker. Punter Marty Simpson has punted well and did an excellent job of forcing Alabama's dan;r_ gerous return man David Palmer to fair catch r(j his punts throughout the game. Kickoff returner id, Frank Adams is an explosive return man who mt has the capability to take any kickoff back for a >w touchdown, ar Grade ? B Overall, the Gamecocks have played well so so far. The 3-4 record is a little disappointing, but iss the Gamecocks haven't played poorly. With a nd few key breaks and some big plays, the he Gamecocks can enjoy a successful second half or of the season just like they enjoyed in 1992. nen's and men's cross country teams won the ross Country Invitational in Columbia Saturday.
