Gamecoi in 23-0 li By MORRIE LYLES Staff Writer STARKVILLE, Miss. ? The Mississippi State Bulldogs stunned the Gamecocks 23-0 Saturday at Scott Field. The Gamecocks seemed lifeless as the Bulldogs controlled the game offensively and defensively. USC was held to a subpar 222 yards on offense and gave up 308 yards on defensive, 269 of them on the ground. The Bulldogs struck first when quarterback Todd Jordan ran six yards on a third-and-goal for a touchdown. The drive seemed to g be a mirror image of how the game would turn out. MSU converted three times on third down on the drive, and tailback Michael Davis rushed for 45 yards on eight carries. MSU added a 25-yard field goal to take a 10-0 halftime lead. USC's defense came out ready to play in the second half. After the defense forced MSU to punt late in the third quarter, Corey Bridges fumbled the attempted return. MSU recovered, and two plays later, Davis ran for a oneyard touchdown to increase the score to 17-0. MSU added two fourth quarter field goals after a Taneyhill fumble and a turnover on downs. USC was ineffective in every aspect of the game. The defense couldn't stop MSU's running attack of Davis and Carl Wi11iarr?cr\n u/hr? hart 91 S nf thp Bulldogs' 269 rushing yards. ^ USC's loss of Norman Greene, the ? team's starting free safety and second leading tackier, because of a concussion didn't help the situation. The USC defense, which was also without starter David Tumipseed, was blown off the line of scrimmage. This enabled MSU to control the game. As for USC's offense, it came into the game limping and left hobbling. Tailback Brandon Bennett, who was hampered by a sprained knee, didn't start for the first time since 1991. Bennett saw limited action but was ineffective, rushing for six yards on seven carries.
