fTv w Gamec By JAWAD ASHY and MATT PLODINEC - Staff Writers i ~ USC flexed its offensive muscle in its home opener Saturday night, gaining 631 yards on the way to a 34-3 against the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Throughout the game, Steve Taneyhill and Brandon Bennett dominated the overmatched Bulldog defense. Taneyhill threw for a career best 311 yards. While Taneyhill was chasing records, Bennett was chasing history, becoming the first Gamecock to gain 100 or more yards receiving and running in the same game. On their first drive, the Gamecocks sputtered when Bennett was stopped behind the line of scrimmage on third down. USC's defense then stopped the Bulldogs in three plays. The Gamecock offense got on track, engineering two long drives in the first quarter but managing only two field goals after Chris Alford arid Toby Cates dropped touchdown passes on consecutive drives. The team took advantage of several glitches it noticed in the film of the Bulldogs and compiled one of the best statistical efforts in school history. "We were making plays and breaking the tackles, and that was much improved over last week," Woods said. While the Gamecocks routed the Bulldogs, they did make several mistakes that Woods will look to work on prior to the Thursday game against Kentucky. "The penalties and the quarterback/center fumbles hurt us," Woods said. "We'll have to work on that."
