CooM GOO Apartment living a culinar Chris I'd been looking forward to returning to USC because some friends and I were lucky enough to snag a Horseshoe apartment. I knew the apartment had its own bathroom, a living room and my own room, dui i was i looKing lorwara to them as much as I was the kitchen. This past year, I lived in the Towers, where cooking entails either hiking 1 down the stairs to warm up your two- 1 day-old Gamecock bacon cheeseburger I or leaving your food in the hallway long I enough to boil it in the shower steam. I I ate so many grilled chicken sand wiches from the Grand Marketplace that m the great grillmeisters recognized me when I returned this past week. In fact, I have a strong suspicion that I've developed an addiction to those things. M, Thus, I was overjoyed to find out I , had a real stove, a real refrigerator, a real oven and real shelves. There's ^ even a grill out back for those canyon-man days when I feel like throwin' some shrimp on the barby. Actually, I've never thrown a shrimp on the barby, but it sounds inviting. I knew I had to prepare for my new life as Chris Muldrow, the self-sufficient cooking student. The first step I took was to raid my mother's kitchen for suitably wom cooking items. She directed me behind the shiny new pots and pans she always uses to stir up tasty treats. I found a veritable nlethora of cookie sheets, sauce pans r - * and skillets that might have actually come from [please Stop J I! I was psyched. Not only would I be able to cook, but I'd be able to cook with the tools of i my ancestors. When I arrived at school, I found out one of my roommates had made a secret deal with Housing Services to advertise the importance of roommates calling each other before they move in. He brought an identical set of dishes from his house, lpavino us with enough place settings, utensils and spatulas to start a short-order diner on the 'Shoe. After we stowed our 33 frying pans, 45 cookie sheets, 26 paring knives and 2,010 Tupperware containers into the convenient kitchen cabinets, we hopped in the car and drove to the grocery store to stock up. Our kitchen was com plete. I was, and still am, a man ready to cool like the wind. I've cooked stuff before. After several years of getting older and livin off undercooked chicken at least once a montf I began to learn what it takes to actually prepar the food for human, non-Scout consumption. Of course, I'm getting pretty good at cookin some stuff like fish, steak and hamburgers People keep telling me that anyone who can pi out a fire can grill burgers, but it takes speck skill to put out burger fires at just the right time My cooking crescendo came a couple c years ago when a friend and I decided t cook for our girlfriends. You can easily see why a kitchen with apprt priate attachments has a special place in m heart. If I had one that night, everything woul be different (pause for a dramatic sigh). So, here I am, a college student with kitchen and a dream. OK, so I microwave some hot dogs for dinner tonight and mixed u some grape Kool-Aid to wash 'em down.
