Coach \\ By NANCY SALOMONSKY Sports Editor Expectations are high going into the 1993 USC football season, and Head Coach Sparky Woods is optimistic about spring training and Southeastern Conference competition. The 1992 campaign was a season of ups and downs and controversy, featuring a young team lacking maturity. "We thought, going into the season, that it was going to be really important that young players contribute," Woods said. "In order to do that, we thought that the older Dlavers were noine to have to nro vide the environment for those young players to contribute. "We got off to a rough start and set goals at the beginning of the year," Woods said. "Our goal was really to improve and win games." In the beginning of the season, tilings looked dismal for the team and Gamecock fans with losses to Georgia, Arkansas, East Carolina, BROUGHTTO vnn rv VV ft# I TWO BEERS AND SOME COLD MEDICINE. But after a resurgence, behind freshman quarterback Steve Taneyhill, USC went on to win five of their last six games. ^ The Gamecocks experience their i! greatest loss on the offensive line because of graduation. Four key starters will be missing from the line: Leroy Jeter, Ernest Dye, Kenny Farrell and Antoine Rivens. "We lost four out of the starting Five on the front, and so that is the big question mark," Woods said. The Gamecocks spent most of their recruiting trying to gqin some "big men" to help fill the void in the offensive line. The quarterback position should belong to Taneyhill, Woods said. L. He has the sophomore curse lurk- bi ing over him, but Woods is hopeful ti< that he will continue his winning w ways of last season. Tj "We expect him to play well and y( provide leadership," Woods said, ex "Obviously, we have to guard against that 'sophomoritis' that of everybody is concerned about.
