NBA A] less tha Was anyone else a ?? little bit disappointed ? by the NBA AU-Star game on Sunday? I mean, yeah, it was a close, hard-played J I "tj game . . . BUT ... if I want to see any ole pi acp nomp thpn I viv/ov ^univ, uivii a u tune in to the Rockford Lii^mhb Lightning versus the Quad City Thunder of the CBA. (I'll bet you SAN didn't know that those ? two squads are in a real race for first in the Mideast Division of the American Conference of the CBA. I'd be willing to double that bet that you really didn't care!) Anyway, when I watch the "Greatest Athletes in the World" (as the players in the NBA like to call themselves), I want to see dunk after dunk after dunk after no-look pass. I want to see Michael Jordan flv thronoh the air. I want "Sir" Charles Barkley going "coast-to-coast" like a runaway Amtrak. I want Shaquille O'Neal to pull the rim off, chew it up and spit it out! I DON'T Want Defense!!! There should be a constitutional amendment that says Pat Riley can't coach in the All-Star game. That would take care of it. Well, enough about that. The one thing that happens at the midpoint of the season is teams taking stock and sometimes trading players to improve for the stretch run. Moments after the game on Sunday, the Los Angeles Lakers and Seattle Supersonics played the home version of "Let's Make a Deal" with Los Angeles sending forward Sam "I Am" Perkins to Seattle for enigmatic center Benoit Benjamin and the rights to their unsigned 1992 No. 1 draft choice, Doug Christie. USC swimi By NANCY SALOMONSKY Staff Writer The SEC Swimming and Diving Championships ended Saturday with the University of Florida's men and women taking both overall team championships. South Carolina's men's team finished eighth overall, while the Lady Gamecocks finished seventh. For the Lakers, the real key to the trade was * Christie, a versatile athlete, who, if ^ y signed, will become the heir apparent to TORI James Worthy. With the acquisition of Benjamin, current Laker center Vlade Divac will probably be traded soon. To Dallas for the rights to the other unsigned rookie, Jim Jackson? Or, maybe to Milwaukee where former Los Angeles Coach Mike Dunleavy would love to have a mobile big man. The Bucks would most likely have to part with one of their young guards in order to get Divac. Other midseason trade rumors: Clyde Drexler from Portland to the Los Angeles Clippers for Danny Manning. This one would be a "blockbuster." Sources say Clyde and his teammates don't see eye-to-eye anymore. No one can apparently see eye-to-eye with Manning. Dennis Rodman is being shopped around to a few clubs by Detroit. The Clips, Suns and Trail Blazers have all shown interest. Where "the Worm" will turn up is anyone's guess at this point. The most confusing possibility is ? get out your computers for this ? Manning to the Suns, Jackson to the Clippers and the lowly Mavericks winding up with an assortment of Phoenix back-ups. Someone should really tell Dallas they already possess an entire TEAM of backups. Maybe Dallas could trade with the aforementioned Lightning or Thunder from ning, diving 4UU-meter treestyle relay. The Lady Gamecocks earned their highest finish of the entire meet as Sara Henninger finished second in the 200-meter breaststroke behind the eventual overall SEC women's individual champion, Lucy Findlay from LSU. USC received a solid performance from freshman Michelle McCarthy, who finished seventh in the 200meter backstroke and had the fastest split time for Carolina in the 400-meter freestyle relay. So, before all these moves, where do the teams stand? It truly is a good ole fashioned Western shootout with Phoenix, Seattle and San Antonio shooting U1C 1111C5, Willie CVCiyUlIC C15C 15 holding pistols. Portland, both Los Angeleses, Utah and Houston have all played good ball at points during the year, but the other three have pulled slightly ahead. An interesting note is that since John Lucas took over the coaching reigns in San Antonio, the Spurs have been the hottest team, and Phoenix is playing under first-year coach Paul Westphal. These two teams would make for an exciting Western final. Look for it to happen, barring injuries. The Eastern Conference might actually pose some serious competition for the Chicago Bulls this year. With the Bulls and Jordan "struggling," Cleveland and New York have made their presence felt. Both can "out-physical" Chicago, and, with strong coaching from Lenny Wilkins and Riley, they both appear ready to move even further in the playoffs. Don't look now, but ? sit down f*rv?* *Vi?o thn \Tanr T a ro air Mate IUI UJld U1C have the conference's fourth best record. Go ahead. Look in the paper. See, I'm completely sober. Chuck Daly has his young team clicking, and they can shoot! The other young "guns" in the East are the Charlotte Hornets. Probably still a couple years away, but they could surprise. Never count out the Celtic mystique, and there's always Shaq and Orlando. Any way it turns out, it should be exciting. Adios! A Al ; teams nop continued to have success at the SEC Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 100mcter freestyle, as well as leading die Gamecocks to a sixth-place finish in die 400-meter freestyle relay widi die fastest split time for Soudi Carolina.
