Gamecoc to sweep By ANDREW BORGERT Staff Writer Crunch time has arrived for the Gamecock basketball team. After starting SEC play in surprisingly strong fashion, the USC hoopsters are showing signs of wear from a season that has been nothing short of a roller coaster ride. All of this leads us to the game on tap Wednesday night when the Florida Gators come to Columbia for a rematch with the Gamecocks. Several weeks ago, Carolina went to Gainesville and upset the Gators 81-76. The win, which came on the heals of a road victory at Tennessee, put Carolina in second place in the SEC East with a 3-2 mark. Since then, the realities of the tough SEC competition have slowed the squad. Since the Jan. 20 victory, the team has gone 2-6. The 1 toughest stretch came during a oneweek period when Carolina played 1 tight games against Vanderbilt on 1 the road and back-to-back overtime ' games against Clemson and 1 Tennessee. The Gamecocks finished the three-day event with an 883 team stroke total (43-over-par), 47 shots behind the tourney champion and Ijpst University of Florida squad. A total of 14 collegiate teams played the 6,216 yard, par 70, University of Florida Golf Course, and, not surprisingly, none of the other 13 could come close to matching the Gators' 836 (4-under-par) score.
