Bergen has taught in 14 countries, including Vietnam, ( China, Israel, Mexico and Nigeria. ( In 1965, while he was in the , Army, Bergen began teaching , English to South Vietnamese sol- , diets. The winters were so cold that students left their :oats and gloves on in class, but, Jespite the weather, no one was late or absent. When Bergen asked the class if here were any questions, the stuJenls would lower their heads and tot respond. A month later, Bergen was told to ask the students to vrite their questions on a sheet of laper, and this worked. Bergen decided to teach at USC because he was offered to teach jndergraduate and graduate stuJents. He is pleased with the high standards established for graduates, 3ut believes more field experiences ind multi-cultural educations are leeded. Bergen thinks there should be a monger link between the College )f Education and public schools. Bergen said the United States' educational system has problems, including low funding, lack of coercion and weak leadership. "The problem cannot be solved quickly, but the new administration may be able to cut into die problem," Bergen said. Bergen disagrees with the notion that countries like Japan and Germany have better school systems than the United States. "We try to educate all of our kids," he said. "It is unfair to compare us to other countries." Bergen's teaching strategy employs a combination of lecture, storytelling, guest speakers, field trips and role-playing. According to Bergen, the major disadvantage of teaching is the low pay. He believes teachers deserve more benefits and higher wages. "The benefits far outweigh the disadvantages," he said.
