Gamecc three-ga By TIM THORSEN Sports Editor South Carolina will get its second look at the Southeastern Conference's leading scorer tonight as Allan Houston and the Tennessee Volunteers invade Frank McGuire Arena. Three weeks ago, the Gamecocks had to go up against conference scoring king Jamal Mashbum of Kentucky. Since then, the Wildcat junior has been passed by Houston, the Tennessee scoring machine. Through 20 games, Houston has tallied 446 points, pouring in an average of 22.3 points a game. Houston also leads the SEC in free throw percentage. Houston, who successfully makes 89.1 percent of his shots from the line, narrowly leads Vanderbilt's Billy McCaffrey. When not at the charity stripe, you can often find Houston spotting up outside the three-point arc. He is third in the SEC in treys per game and ranks 10th in the conference in three-point Field goal percentage. Controlling Houston will be a must if die Gamecocks are to break men inree-game losing sireaK. Welcome 1 In case you are not ^ aware of it, junior swimmer Jon Moore has been charged with having a device that |K can cause damage by . fire or other means I after chemical bombs exploded 'Friday night in two Five Points Lbhhmi establishments. Three or four other athletes, not all on the ROD R1 swim team, are also L?? under investigation, according to Columbia Police investigator Everette Smith. The kicker of it all is that this no-brainer would be allowed to swim in the Southeastern Conference Championships next weekend in Arkansas if he can get preliminary trial intervention. Allen, the Volunteers' 6-foot-6 forward, has been a force in the paint this year for a Tennessee squad lacking any scoring punch behind Houston. Allen is the 19thranked scorer in the SEC with an average of 12.9 points a game. Allen has also been a force on the boards, ripping down an average of six rebounds per contest, good enough for ninth place in the SEC. For the Gamecocks to end their skid, they must receive the type of outside bombing they got during the Clemson game. Junior guard Waide Franklin looks to receive much more playing time after his 6-for-12 performance from the land r\f tbrano U1 UI1LLO. Junior forwards Jamie Watson and Emmett Hall must also continue their dominant play. Watson and Hall are 15th and 18th, respectively, in the SEC in scoring. Watson pumps in 15.2 points a game, while Hall hits for 13.3 a night. Hall must also be the monster on the boards that he has been up to this point. Hall ranks eighth in the conference in rebounding, wiping the glass clean for slightly more than seven boards per game. The health of sophomore point :o reality! I'm arriving upon this h conclusion because if we need Mr. a Moore to compete next weekend, tl we must be making some fat cash ti from this guy. Another thing: How did all these li losers post bail?
