Too often, music critics drone on about musical chemistry flowing between the wailing voices, flailing guitars and nailing drums of modern rock TT roll. Raw genius. Since his immediate rise to stardom as MTV's cynic-in-residence, Leary's signature rant 'n' rave style rips through his off-Broadway monologue like a hypercorrosive whirlwind. Wildly kinetic and brutally honest, Leary's take on life spits on political and social correctness and laughs at everything painful. "No Cure" barrels over the typical sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll motif, but attacks it in Leary's own wicked way. Opening with a sort of hearty disclaimer for the rest of the show, Leary's hostile performance begins to border on insanity. His rapid-fire delivery barrages the audience with a salvo of frustrations over smoking, red meat and dead rock stars. Leary never misses a beat, and sometimes it's difficult to tell if he's le roots of the vocals, but occasionally McGhee takes the lead to prove his mastery of the instrument. While McGhee's guitar and voice are essential and skillful parts of McGhee and Terry's music, Terry's "harp" is the lead attraction. It's relatively easy to learn a couple of riffs on a harmonica, but mastery of the instrument takes a good bit of dedication, a great amount of practice, and an infinite store of soul and feeling. Terry pours his heart into the 10 holes of his harp, and the little steel harmonica wails, cries, moans, and sings with emotion. Terry makes his instrument sound almost human. "Sonny's Squall," the first song on the disc, is a great introduction to Terry's driving harmonica with A jf I > ~ c: _ i i ivicuuee s mm vocai anu guuai uigings. V THE Perez/The Gamecock /es listeners smoking breathing between bits. It it wasn't for comedy, Leary could almost make a career out of smoking. His affection for cigarettes and everything cancerous has charged him up with an abrasive testosterone-gorged act that plays upon our fear of mortality. He makes Andrew "Dice" Clay look like a Boy Scout. Angered and gleefully bitter, there isn't a whole lot that can scare Denis Leary. Between screaming about crack cocaine and the honors of Yoko Ono and the Bee Gees, Leary has a truckload of personal demons that he doesn't mind sharing with the rest of us. "You know what hell is, folks? Hell is Andy Gibb singing 'Shadow Dancing' for eons and eons, and you have to wear orange-plaid bellbottoms, and you have to sit next to the Bay City Rollers. This is sheer therapy. "Life isn't fair, folks," he growls. "Get a helmet." 1 think you hear him knocking, and I think he's letting himself in. rock'n'roll "Midnight Special" shows what the classic Creedence Clearwater Revival sounded like before it was a Creedence Clearwater Revival song. McGhee and Terry's rhythmic harmony and chemistry is most apparent in "Red River Blues," where the two masters flip-flop verses and instrumentals with ease. "Blues of Happiness," the final cut on the disc, shows the true nature of the blues. It reminds listeners that blues music is designed to pull emotions from the deepest pits to the highest peaks. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee make old-style blues accessible for non-blues fans, and they may just convert some people into foot-stomping, harp-dabbling blues admirers. Terry and McGhee are truly masters of the art of the blues. fc AIDS. Call 1-800-322-AIDS inp Irlint
