Wednesday, December 9, 1992 Hearst shot COLUMN On Saturday, the Downtown Athletic Club will award their 58th edition of the Heisman trophy, annually given to the finest college football player in the nation. Here's to hoping that the sportswriters around the nation and the former Heisman winners will actually use their brains and NOT vote for Miami quarterback Gino Torretta. Simply put, University of Georgia runningback Garrison Hearst deserves the honor, and should he not receive it, he has my permission to personally go around the country and beat the living fool (no, not Tim Thorsen) out of every one of the voters. December cruc COLUMN It's the month of December an<j the NFL's best always rise to the top, which means look for the Redskins and 49'ers to step up Washington and San Franciscc have the best winning percentage5 in the month of December in the past 10 years, .757 and .821 respectively. But Washingtor might lose its Wild Card bid to the red-hot Green Bay Packers. Bre Favre and Sterling Sharpe have really come on of late. Dallas anc Pittsburgh joined San Franciscc and New Orleans in the playoilj with their victories last Sunday. I irony had its way we would see < Dallas-Pittsburgh rematch of those great late '70s Super Bowl games. In the AFC West, San Diego ha: moved ahead of Denver, who fel to Dallas, 31-27, and into a first place tie with Kansas City. In nine games Hearst gained more than 100 yards, including a season-high 246 yards versus Vanderbilt. The 5-foot-ll, 195- pound junior added 324 yards on 22 receptions and 2 TD's as well. Most importantly, Hearst has been durable, playing in all of the Bulldogs' games this year. Second place in the voting should go to San Diego State's sensational sophomore runningback Marshall Faulk. The only reason that Faulk won't be the winner is the fact that he missed the equivalent of almost 2 1/2 games due to ial month for m< looking too good for Buffalo. The most astounding stat of all is that versus Top 25 teams this year, Faulk averaged a mind-boggling 234 yards per contest. Faulk rushed for the NCAA season-high of 300 yards against Hawaii, and ran for 299 yards versus BYU. He also dashed into the endzone 15 times on the year. Now should come the aforemen- | tioned Torretta in 3rd. The senior QB did post some nice numbers this season... unfortunately his best games came against Miami's weaker opponents. In the Hurricanes' rhrpp mainr rnnfp?K this vpar vpr sus Penn State, Florida State, and Syracuse, Torretta performed average at best, tossing most of his entire seasons' interceptions. He just is not Heisman material. So it's Hearst for Heisman in '92. Congrats to Garrison! 3st NFL teams Denver, and Washington is riding high after thumping the Giants, 2810.
