The Lady Gamecocks were led by senior Marsha Williams, whc scored 16 points, and junior Nikki Bass, who scored 13 points. The starting five for South Carolina included forwards Michelle Murray, and Jenny Randall, center Williams, and guards Bass and Shannon Johnson. This could mean only one thing: the bowl season has arrived. And as it always seems, one team is alone atop the cooliege football polls, the Miami Hurricanes. Miami faces second-ranked Alabama in the USF&G Sugar Bowl. Led by quarterback Gino Torretta and a fleet of lightning quick linebackers, the Hurricanes have won 29 in a row while Alabama has an impressive 21game winning streak on the line. Defense has been the earmark of both teams this past season. But in the SEC Championship Game, Florida exposed the major weakness in Alabama's defensive alignment. By using shuttle passes, Florida quarterback Shane Matthews was able to avoid the outside pass rush of defensive ends John Copeland and Eric Curry. Miami must uunze running oacK Stephen McGuire's receiving ability if they expect to use Alabama's overpursuit to their advantage. Torretta would then be able to use his gang of wide receivers to attack Alabama's secondary. No team this season, with the fflBP Tp ' ' B8r: '' ' M ' ' * fe& :wn^? ' ;. Wilson said. "I think, due to us ?or national ti exception of Arizona, has been able to shut down the recieving talents of Lamar Thomas, Horace Copleland and Kevin Williams. Alabama also features AilAmerican defensive backs George Teague and Antonio Langham. This duo could give Miami as much trouble as any defensive backs in the country. For Alabama offensively, the rushing of Derric Lassie drives the squad. Lassie's up-the-middle style of running will face, perhaps, the best group of college football linebackers history in Michael Barrow, Jesse Armstead and Darrin Smith. These defensive backs hit like freight trams. A1oKotv?o noocinn ot io rviai/oina auav.iv 10 auLquate, but the aspect that makes them dangerous is receiver David Palmer. Palmer's speed and surprising strength make him the top target of quarterback Jay Barker, which will keep Miami's defense from cheating up on the line. In another New Year's Day bowl game, the Colorado Buffaloes (9-11) will play the Syracuse Orangemen (9-2) in the Fiesta Bowl. Both teams rely on speed and passing to score points. The Lady Gamecocks are 3-1 and travel to Lexington, Ky., for Wednesday game against the Lady Kats of the University of Kentucky. This will be South Carolina's first Southeastern Conference game of the season, and the tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. tie in New Ye the athleticism of Marvin Graves. The Buffs, Big Eight Conference runner-up, have two great linebackers in Chad Brown and Greg Beikert. These two seniors, both Butkus Award candidates, are two of the top three tacklers for Colorado. This should pose a threat to Syracuse should they decide to run the football. Ismail, in addition to being a tremendous receiver, also handles kickoff and punt return duties as well. The Orangemen hope to stifle Colorado's passing attack (297.4 yard average) with superb linebackers Garland Hawkins and Chip Todd and nose guard Kevin Mitchell providing the pressure on Stewart. This looks to be the only way for the Orangemen to have a chance because of the fact that three of their defensive backs are new this season. For the second time in a row, No.7 Michigan and No. 11 Washington will play each other in Pasedena, Calif. Last year's game meant the national championship for Washington, who routed the Wolverines 35-14. This year, Michigan has a better chance at winning. Both teams are coming off somewhat disappointing seasons. Washington lost to Arizona when it was ranked No.l and then lost to Washington State the next week. In addition, the Huskies have also undergone internal turmoil when quarterback Billy Joe Hobert was declared ineligible by the NCAA for taking $50,000 in loans from a booster and a linebacker was caught dealing marijuna in a dorm building. Despite this adversity, Don Jame's club still posses a potent offense. Quarterback Mark Brunell is no stranger to running the Husky offense and running backs Beano Bryant and Jay Barry dominated Michigan last year. However, Washington's offensive line is suspect.
