The battle re-enactments take place nearly every weekend in towns all over the South and up into Pennsylvania, Rose said. The events usually are organized by a city or county government that contacts the individual re-enactment units. There are hundreds of such units in operation around the country. Rose is a member of the Second South Carolina Calvary, General Wade Hampton's Legion Squadron. The unit has 1 approximately 20 members and is a suDDort eroun of the Palmetto rr o r Battalion, one of the larger re-enactment organizations in irages competit in as many as 25 races in one seay son, although not all members go n to every race. "We always have somone placfi ing and have respectable finishes d in the races we go to," Dudley t said. Dudley became involved with ii the team after visiting Out-spokin' e for repairs on his mountain bike. "We're here to educate," Rose said. "We try to portray the average soldier as he lived in camp life." I started riding around the neighborhood as a kid and kind of got pulled into racing by some guys I knew who did it," Counts said.
