One grant for SI.3 million was awarded to the marine biology department by the Peace Corps to leach students how to raise fish. This skill enables the students to teach people in Africa the techniques. Another grant, for S400,000, was awarded by the National Science Foundation to support the research of Doug Williams in the geology department for his work in Siberia that may reveal up to 25 million years of climatological history. Warming relations between the former Soviet Union and the United Slates allowed the chairman of the physics and astronomy department, Frank Avignone III, to do research with members of Moscow's Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics. Frank Caruccio received a S200,(X)0 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency Lo find a wav in fitrhl acid mine drainage. This form of pollution threatens drinking water, fish and vegetation nationwide. All other existing methods to eliminate this pollution have failed, but with funding, Caruccio may be able to succeed.
