In the past two years USC science
professors have received
more than S5 million in funding
from national and international organizations
for everything from
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome to programs
for saving the environment.
One grant for SI.3 million was
awarded to the marine biology department
by the Peace Corps to
leach students how to raise fish.
This skill enables the students to
teach people in Africa the
techniques.
Another grant, for S400,000,
was awarded by the National Science
Foundation to support the research
of Doug Williams in the
geology department for his work in
Siberia that may reveal up to 25
million years of climatological
history.
Warming relations between the
former Soviet Union and the United
Slates allowed the chairman of
the physics and astronomy department,
Frank Avignone III, to do
research with members of Moscow's

you consider how competitive N1H

A strong storm system visited
the Columbia area Thursday afternoon
causing high wind gusts, rain
and even tornadoes, WOLO-TV
meteorologist Mark Phister said.
The Columbia Metropolitan Airport,
a National Weather Service
center, reported gusts of 69 miles
per hour at 3:20 p.m. A tornado
watch and thunderstorm warnings
were issued by the Emergency
Broadcast System.

Professors on campus also are
receiving funding to find ways of
curbing pollution. Frank Caruccio

This form of pollution threatens
drinking water, fish and vegetation
nationwide. All other existing
methods to eliminate this pollution
have failed, but with funding, Caruccio
may be able to succeed.
The goals of these projects may
not be achieved, but most professors
agreed none of the research
will be done in vain.
