Stars, strong heading to C for annual n By ROB RODUSKY Staff Writer The 16th Annual Columbia Marathon will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday when about 2,000 people take to the streets competing in four different races. Besides the marathon, there is also a 10K Run, 4K Run/Walk and a Youth Cross Country Run. All runs start from the Marriot Hotel, located at Main and Hampton streets, except the Youth Cross Country run, which takes place on the intramural fields beside USC's Sol Blatt P.E. Center. All runs finish at this physical education center. The 26.2 mile marathon will take almost 300 runners through USC, Shandon and the surrounding terrain. The men's category has Jeff Martin of Greensboro, N.C. as the favorite, and he is going for an unprecedented third consecutive victory. The women's race favorites are Columbia native and former champion Anne Weston and MaryEllen Durocher of Arlington, Va. The winners for both categories are expected to cross the finish line in less than three hours. The 4K Fun Run/Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. on the corner of Sumter and Hampton streets. This race, which includes 300 contestants, should finish within 30 minutes. About 550 six to 15-year-olds will compete in different events in the Youth Cross Country Run. The participants will compete in a number of different events starting at 10:15 a.m. Everyone is invited Friday at 7:30 p.m. to hear the special guest speaker Dr. George Sheehan. Sheehan, 71, helped start the running boom 20 years ago. The "Gum of Running" will talk from the perspective of a doctor, runner and historian. Associate Race Director Rick Noble said Sheehan will be very informative and ready to answer any questions. Adding some international flavor to the race are Brian Stride from Canada, one of the top masters runners in the country, Kerry Robinson from Britain and Terry Thornton from England.
