senior forward Joe Rhett ar
nounced he could no longer pla
basketball for USC because of
change in his heart condition.
"I'm sad, for the university, th;
he will no longer be able to pla
basketball, but I think it is in th
interest of Joe Rhett in the Ion
run," journalism sophomore Tod
Oomens said.
"I'm saddened with the loss c
Joe Rhett," music junior Eugen
Brooks said. "He was such a gre;
player; he had unbelievable ball fc
lent. I feel sorry for him ... he lo:
a great part of his life. He must fc
really disappointed."
Some students believed it woul
physically be better off for Rhe
to sit out the rest of his senic
season.
"Nothing's worth endangerin
your health," English sophomor
Desiree Lee said. "If you can
play, you can't play. I don't thin
your life's worth a basketba"
game."
It's best for him not to play anj
more, marine science sophomor
Norman Guerra said.
"That's a devastating loss fc
our basketball team, but it's out c
athletic hands now," business ad
ministration sophomore John Nai
ang said. "I would rather have
living Joe Rhett than a dead one."
Head basketball coach Stev
Newton expressed regret over th
loss of Rhett.
"Our basketball family regrei
the development of this unforti
nate circumstance," Newton sai<
"However, we all feel better froi
our relationship with Joe as a teai
and as a basketball program froi
having known him."
Newton said he believed ever
possible medical option has bee
researched for Rhett, and he sai
he was sorry Rhett could no longr

"We count our blessings that he
is in good hands ana that we had
the opportunity of working with
>s Joe to this point," Newton said.
"Obviously, his accomplishments
i_ stand on their own merits, he got
iy off to a tremendous year, and our
a team is certainly going to miss Joe
Rhett very much."
at Newton announced the Gamey
cocks will change from a control
ie offense to a transitional, perimeter
,g offense to make up for the loss of
U Rhett.
"We can't play the same style of
offense without Joe," Newton said.
ie "We don't have the ones to get the
at points in the paint."
j. "We will change our style to a
st more emotional offense, a finesse
>e offense," Newton said. "We will
look to a smaller line-up-to push
(j the ball up the floor in a transition
tt offense."
)r Newton said no one could fill
the void left by Rhett.
g "We can never replace Joe
e Rhett," Newton said. "He was a
>t complete player. He could score
k from the paint, he was a threat
[j from the perimeter, he could
handle the ball well, and he was a
good possession rebounder."
e Assistant coach Craig Morris,
who deals primarily with forwards
ir and centers, said senior center Jeff
Roulston, junior forwards Chris
I_ Leso and Edmund Wilson will
have to fill the void left by Rhett's
a absence.
"We're going to ask them to
e step up, just like Chris (Leso)
e stepped forward for the Alabama
game," Morris said.
Morris said the trio will work on
is its endurance because they will be
i- playing more minutes,
i Wilson said he will be playing
n harder to pull down the rebounds
T) that Rhett brought in for USC.
ti "We're picking up the new offense
really well," Wilson said. "I
y don't think there will be a problem
n switching over."
d Senior guard Bojan Popovic also
Jr said the team is responding well to
the new offense.

The 16th Annual Columbia
Marathon will kick off at 9 a.m.
Saturday when about 2,000 people
take to the streets competing in
four different races.
Besides the marathon, there is
also a 10K Run, 4K Run/Walk and
a Youth Cross Country Run. All
runs start from the Marriot Hotel,
located at Main and Hampton
streets, except the Youth Cross
Country run, which takes place on
the intramural fields beside USC's
Sol Blatt P.E. Center. All runs finish
at this physical education
center.
The 26.2 mile marathon will
take almost 300 runners through
USC, Shandon and the surrounding
terrain. The men's category has
Jeff Martin of Greensboro, N.C. as
the favorite, and he is going for an
unprecedented third consecutive
victory.
The women's race favorites are
Columbia native and former
champion Anne Weston and MaryEllen
Durocher of Arlington, Va.
The winners for both categories
are expected to cross the finish
line in less than three hours.
Assistant Director to the Media
Larry Mattox said the 10K is an
especially strong and star-studded
event.
